Possibly the i greatest troubles A j with which the /aLiTJICC .poultry keeper has '\ to contend just now are cessation Hmm of grow th in the young stock, shy feathering in those z 7 birds which are trie leaving nursery days behind, and t-j r insect vermin ev- ery where. T li e experienced hand will know how to f deal with the first A_Z(zc LUf of these annoy- ances, and he will deal promptly, for to go on feeding birds which for weeks steadfastly refuse to grow means loss. Sometimes, it Is true, a change in the weather will bring about all that is de sired. If it has been cold and wet, fine weather will set the chickens growing, and it is equally true that a long period of drought checks the development, w hlj h may or may not be resumed aft er rain. In many cases, I think it is monotony, sameness, want of change— not only in food and environment, but in the weather and other things—which are mainly responsible for a check in the grow th of chickens. i Food one might naturally suppose, is of primary importance, but it alone I will not, in some instances, promote growth We may give the birds the best that can be bought, we may change the diet, and do all that is in our power tn push them on, with no re sponsi if other matters are negated. Each one must, therefore, study the ■ ircumsmnees under which he is placed, I and lie w ill, if he be of ordinary ability,, soon be able to locate the reason why his chit kens have stopped growing, and w hat is more, he w ill have a remedy at hand. Much, of course, can be done in the matter of special diet suited to the weather and conditions. Plenty of juicy vegetables-—lettuce, especially, or endive—ln hot, dry weather, amj a ju dicious allowance of lean meat will’be most beneficial. The breaking up of flocks into smaller ones, giving each a separate house, and providing ample fresh air at night, is also a good plan to pursue. Most of all, a new run. a change of scene and ground, is the best promoter of growth, and it should be taken advantage of win never possible. Many breeders make a practice of re serving certain spaees of ground into which the chickens nn.y lie placed fora change, and if these runs have pre viously been cropped with hay so much the better. Shade—that of trees or bushes particularly—is also very bene ficial. and It will he the better’ appre ciated If perches are provided for the chickens to rest on during the day. If it is cold or wet, or windy, special at tention is again desirable to promote grow th. There must be an increase in the fat-forming constituents of the food, of whjch linseed (stewed) is per haps the best for occasional use. ('are must be taken to prevent the chickens from taking colds or developing bron chial or lung troubles—the results not only of bad weather, but of overcrowd ing and unclean houses —which are ef f'-etual checks to growth and tiresome ailments to cure. A sufficiency of wholesome food Is. of course, necessary to rfie well being of the fowls, and it should not be of too fattening a natrfre. A good summer feed is bran mixed with boiled house scraps into a crumbly mass and given nearly cold. For evening feed, in hot weather, oats and wheat may be given alternately. Fowls in confinement must be given a certain amount of animal food to replace the insects which they would pick up for themselves if they iiad their liberty. Half an ounce of meat, either dried or butcher’s scraps, should be given to each bird per day' If dried meat is used it may be mixed with the house scraps If these do not contain sufficient meat for the fowjs’ wants.
