Possibly the greatest troubles A J rt-itb which the Xi CITJICC poultry keeper has to contend jus! now are cessation /< of growth in the * ' young stock, shy feathering in those j 7 bir is which are I'lC lea ring nursery days behind, and rj /. Insect vermin ev- iQllltW erywhete. The experienced hand will know how to / zZtZ’/ou deal with the first g-z(/l$W of these annoy ances, and he will deal promptly, for to go on feeding birds which for weeks steadfastly iifusi io grow means los.-. Sometimes, it is true, a change in the weather will bring about all that is de sired. If it has been cold ami wet, fine weather will set the dickens growing, and it is equally true that a long period of drought checks the development, which may or may not be resumed aft er rain In many cases, 1 think it is monotony, sameness, want of change not only in food and environment, but in the weather and other things—which are mainly responsible for a check in the growth of chickens. Food on- might naturally suppose, is of primary importance, but It alone will not. in some instances, promote growth We may give the birds the best that can be bought, we may change the diet, and do all that Is in our power to push them on, with no re sponse if othe ; matters are neglected. Each one must, therefore, study the circumstances under which lie is piaced, and h( will, if he be of ordinary ability, soon he able to locate the reason why his chickens have stopped growing, and what is more, he will have a remedy at hand. Much, of course, can be done in the matter of special diet suited to the weather and conditions. Plenty of juicy vegetables—lettuce, especially, or endive—in hot, dry weather, and a ju dicious allowance of lean meat will be most beneficial. The breaking up of flocks into smaller ones, giving each a separate house, and providing ample frosh air at night, is also a good plan to pursue. Most of all, a new run. a change of scene and ground, is the best promoter of growth, and it should b< taken advantage of whenever possible. Many breeders make a practice us re serving certain spues of ground into which the chickens may be placed fora change, and if these runs have pre viously been cropped with hay so much the better. Shade—that of trees or bushes particularly- Is also very bene ficial. and it will be the better’ appre ciated if perches are provided for the' chickens to rest on during the day. If it is cold or wet, or windy, special at tention Is again desirable to promote growth. There must be an increase In the fat-forming constituents of the food, of which linseed (stewed) is per haps the best for occasional use. Care must be taken to prevent the chickens from taking colds or developing bron chia! or lung troubles- the results not only of bad weather, but of overcrowd ing and unclean houses—which are ef fectual checks to growth and tiresome ailments to cure. A sufficiency of wholesome food is, of course, necessary to trie well being of the fowls, and it should not be of too fattening a nature. A good summer feed is bran mixed with boiled house scraps Into a crumbly mass and given nearly cold For evening feed, in hot weather, oats and wheat may be given alternately. Fowls in confinement must given a certain amount of animal food to replace the Insects which they would pick up for themselves if they had their liberty. Half an ounce of meat, either dried or butcher’s scraps should be given to each bird per dav' If dried meat Is used it. may be mixed with the house scraps If these do not contain sufflcient meat for the fowls’ wants.—lnland Poultry’ Journal.
