We profoundly
believe that one -I.UC lUf
should lay large
plans for the future, bitt we believe as
profoundly that he should start small
and work toward those plans by de
grees, as experience may justify. A
breeder with small plans will always be
a small breeder, but an inexperienced
breeder who attempts to follow large
plans will be something worse than a
small breeder -he will be a complete
failure.
• • •
Mow many chickens should a hen
attempt to brood? Opinions differ as
to the correct answer to that question.
One prominent breeder says that a hen
should never be given more than nine
chickens (which is a joke, of course);
if more are placed with her thfiy will
gradually die off until about nine only
are left. Others profess success with
allowing a hen to brood fifteen or
twenty chickens, and some even exceed
these figures. Much will undoubtedly
depend upon the environment. The
way the hens are kept, the time of year,
the temperature, the character of the
weather —these and other matters are
factors tn determining the answer to
ttie question.
« • •
Many failures In poultry keeping are
directly traceable to overcrowded quar
ters in the hen house.
• ♦ »
The fancier can cull h!s flock every
month in the year unless he has a very
few birds. Off specimens are always
developing.
• • •
The breeder who expects his chickens
to be absolutely uniform ought to raise
white beans—he could then get the de
sired uniformity.
• • •
We should not expect to accomplish
wonders at a single bound, but success
Is apparently assured where we observe
careful methods and give time, perse
verance and thought to our work and
are guided by practical ideas.
• • •
No one can hope to make much
money with poultry who prefers to
guess rather than to think. There is
rarely ever any serious trouble in a
flock of fowls that is cared for by an
earnest, thoughtful poultry keeper, and
such a flock yields a steady profit, while
a flock which is cared for on the hap
py-go-lucky order of guessing as to
cause and effect is rarely free from
serious trouble or losses. Brains is a
necessary investment in poultry’ cul
ture to make it really profitable poul
try keeping.
• • »
Fowls should bo given all the water
they will drink. Have it fresh and
clean.
* • •
The hens before long will be playing
a losing game in feathers. But their
loss will turn into gain as they gain
their new suits again.
♦ ♦ •
The best time to begin to train a
bird for exhibition is with its first feed
ing after it has been hatched.
♦ ♦ ♦
Try to make two chickens grow where
but one grew before. This doesn’t mean
to set double-yolked eggs.
♦ ♦ •
A Minnesota hen has Just laid an egg
that weighs 4 1-2 ounces. Better send
it to Dr. Wiley as proof that all hens
are not sacrificing size to numbers.
♦ • ♦
Breeders always used to ship 13 eggs
for a setting, but of late years 15 has
been the regulation number. Has the
change been made because the packing
cases have places for 15 eggs, or has
’’unlucky 13” anything to do with it?
The number 13 is certainly unlucky for
the buyer If he can get 15 eggs for the
same money.--Poultry’ Fancier.
