18 THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEWS.’ READ FOR PROFIT— GEORGIAN WANT ADS--USE FOR RESULTS WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, Wj. ■ ■■■ ■ . .. ... ' ' " —" " —-■ , , „ , Poultry, Pet and Live Stock By CHARLES A. MUTHS. There has been very much said 4 and written about /A Cl ICC how quickly a person may be- » , come rich and In- PVO 111 dependent at poul try’ raising. Some people think that flip all you have to do If IV is to get an incu bator. a few books n «///<-<, of so-called poul- 1 011 III\ try secrets, and some poultry rem edies, and you are jJOCtOV fully equipped to launch into the poultry business. Os course, you may think vou know it all. You have spent money and time to get fixed up and you may have studied your poultry books and know them by heart and ahink you can teach the other fellow how to make the money, but let me tell vou this—one practical man is better than all the theories you can dope up. and yet, both have knowledge. The onlv difference is, the one knows from actual experience while the ot ” eI knows only from reading poultry books and doesn’t know whether the books are right or not. Now, I am not writing this to dis courage poultry raising. I want to see more raised and want everyone to suc ceed and do well in the business, and to accomplish this you ought to start right. Do not go into the business with great expectations. If you do you may be badly disappointed. Now. to start right isn't a very difficult matter. F'lrst I should advise you to visit different poultry yards, find out how thev are doing, t'alk with poultry breed ers.’the man who is in the poultry busi ness in your locality, but. above all. don't say’ to him. "Don’t you think you ought to do so and so?” for If you do you will not get much advice. After you have talked with some of these men and acquired a certain knowledge, get equipped. Then you must get a good old tested and tried breed. Do not think that you ought to have forty-’leven different breeds. One will do you very nicely. T started in six years ago to raise the Barred Plymouth Rocks I was told by some so-called advisers that 1 ought to start with some of those newly in vented breeds. Well, the newly in- i vented, ones might be just as good or i even better, but I didn’t think so. for if j everybody were more or less raising ; Barred Rocks they surely must be al good breed. I am still raising them, and have found that I did not make a mistake in my selection. As a general purpose fowl they are hard to beat. They look well, are very hardy, of quick growth and good layers. Our next venture was to raise ducks, j We tried the Pekins, but found they • were not what we wanted, so we got the Indian Runner. They are Just the thing for "winter laying;" they begin laying at about five months and lay for nearly ten months out of the twelve, and their eggs are pure white. They are very small feeders, are easily raised and need no pond or creek, just bucket of water will do them. Orpingtons. Velasquez Years Ago—Won by Sheer Persistence. PARIS, July 31.—Caruso has at lasts won by sheer persistency in his most) recent love affair. Mlle. Velasquez, the daughter of Monsieur De Paz, a wealthy; Argentine, who, dying recently, left her! with numerous estates, but no means'! to maintain them, has at last become betrothed to the famous tenor, and is wearing a wonderful ruby, set in dia-' monds, making a ring which binds the bargain. This seems really to be the greatest’ romance in Caruso’s romantic life. He?; was a great friend of her father, and; watched the girl grow Into womanhood.’ to find the love for the child develop into a great passion for the woman. For the past year, and especially since 1 the father’s death, which left her tn such embarrassing circumstances, Ca-«i ruso has laid siege fr> Mlle. Velasquez’s? heart, bombarding it daily with bunches of orchids and presents of all kinds.; But Mlle. Velasquez was adamant, and her highly sensitive and artistic nature? expressed itself to friends when she told them that she could never bring herself to "marry a butcher, even if he were the world's greatest tenor." i Caruso Didn't Despair. ' But Caruso never despaired, and tolff her he knew she would love him soma day. When he was out of Paris floods of telegrams and continual bunches of orchids poured into her house, No. 14 Avenue de la Grande Armee, reminding her constantly of the tenor’s devotion., : So strong was the siege that Mlle. Ve . lasquez has at last had her endurance tried to the limit and has been forced to surrender. One of the first things the newly en gaged couple did was to have a photo graph taken in the most loving atti tude. Then Mlle. Velasquez went toi Italy, leaving Caruso here to sign im portant contracts for South America, and although these contracts involved a sum of $84,000 —he Is to get $7,000 for each night he appears in Buenos Ayres —yet the manager could scarcely per suade Caruso to remain in Paris long enough to sign the papers. ?so anxious was he to get to his betrothed. Before going to South America, Caruso will sing at Ostend, where he gets $4,000 a night for just two songs. Mlle. Velasquez must be called rather stout and has a peculiar type of Span ish beauty pleasing, but not extraordi nary. , In order to obtain what is justly her right she has Instituted proceedings against*her father’s estate. She says she will never marry Caruso until she is absolutely independent financially, as she would never be content living off . any man’s bounty. Mlle. Velasquez is very musical and sings well. No definite date has been set for the wed ding, as Mlle. Velasquez desires a set tlement of the case against her father’s estate before marrying. It is said the family appreciates the omission of Mlle- Velasquez’s name in the will as merelv an oversight and will compromise the matter with her.
