,10,000 ARMED MINERS
i ON STRIKE READY FOR
BATTLE WITH TROOPS
CHARLESTON, W. VA„ July 31
A bloody conflict is imminent between
10,000 armed miners and 500 militia
men in the Paint Creek coal district.
Shortly before midnight a detach
ment of 24 soldiers sent to that dis
trict to preserve order was fired on
from ambush and three of the soldiers
wounded. Two thousand miners in
battle array started at dawn, through
the mountains to Sterling, in Boone
county, determined to drive out the
guards about the workings of the
Hickory Coal Company.
Three hundred and fifty national
guardsmen w ere ordered to follow their
trail. Along the route there was desul
tory firing from ambush at the soldiers,
which impeded their progress toward
the miners. The miners declared their
purpose was to drive out the guards
whom the operators refused to dismiss
in spite, of the fact that the militia is
on the scene to protect their property.
Every miner in the ivstriet is armed.
Hundreds of titles have been sent into
the coal region from Charleston during
the past few days,
