NO TARIFF RESULTS
FROM THIS SESSION;
TAFT’S VETO IN WAY
Washington, Aug. 2.—The long'
’a iff u*r angle that has marked the |
present session of congress will be bat - I
ren of actual results, according to pre- I
dictions made today by members of
both house and senate. Every tariff
bill that reaches the president this ses- 1
sion. with the possible exception of the I
sugar measure, is expected to meet his j
prompt veto. Therein is included the
excise measure which is expected to be
■passed soon.
The sugar bill, which the president
might sign if it came to him in any
thing like the form it passed the sen
ate, probably will not be enacted at all.
SLAYERS ACQUITTED ON
ANNIVERSARY OF KILLING!
SAVANNAH. GA., Aug. 2. —Hugh 1
Boggs and John Willis Worley, the Ala
bama boys accused of the death of Jas
per H. Turner, a negro, on the Augusta
road, on August 1, 1911, were adjudged
not guilty by a jury in the superior court
last night, exactly one year after the kill
'D
It is intimated that charges of larceny
will now be preferred against them. It is
alleged they ran away In Turner’s auto- I
mobile after the homicide and sold it I
for SIOO. The young men did not deny
the killing, but claimed self defense*
throughout. Worley was convicted once ’
and sentenced to life imprisonment, but
the supreme court granted a new trial.

Entry of Alexander Means
Campaign on Precise Lines,
With Lots of Ginger. ’
Despite the fact that political ob
servers find it hard to figure Hooper
Alexander a winner in the giibernaio
i rial primary, the impression is that his
, candidacy will bring the campaign .
I down to definite and precise lines and
! insure plenty of ginger.
I It is admitted Air. Alexander’s late
and unheralded entry into the tight
starts him at a disadvantage. The
campaigns of both Air. Slaton and Air.
Hall have been under way for months, I
and each has effected an organization !
aggressive and compact. Generally
speaking, the newspapers' of the’ state
already have taken sides, and thou-
I saUds of citizens have committed them
selves either to Slaton or Hall.
At the same time. Mr. Alexander
plainly intends forcing his antagonists
to take definite and unmistakable i
stands on more than one subject they j
may have preferred to sidestep.
He will be able to make himself ex- I
tremely pestiferous to his enemies on i
the subjects of prohibition, the exten
sion of tile Western and Atlantic rail- '
road, the initiative, the referendum and i
. Hie recall, child labor, the proposed '
federal amendment concerning popu
lar election of senators and corpora
tion interference in politics.
Undoubtedly the DeKalb county
statesman will undertake to assemble
as nearly as he may the old anti-joe
Brown element, and rally it to his
cause. He will not call it the Hoke
Smith following, but he expects it to be
recruited largely from that faction.
There has been no split between Alex
ander and Senator Smith, notwith- |
standing some alleged anti-Smith sen-
| laments recently uttered on the floor <>fi
the house by the DeKalb county man
Senator Smith is being qtinted as I
determined to keep "hands off," but I
there are Doubting Thomases abroad I
who take precious little stock in that I
assertion, and swallow it with many I
grains of salt.
