LOH itTV Inquiries re- ' yarding < heap and f A reliald. methods / of pet ■■ I vlng ■* L 1 are so frequently j received as to indicate that the matter; is one of general interest. Several | methods have been proposed and used | I with varying degrees of success, but one of comparatively recent origin de sert es etpecial notice because of its simplicity, cheapness and reliability. Water glass (silicate of •sodium) can , be purchased of wholesale dealers in I chemicals in 5 or 10-gallon lots and of a , specific gravity of app ox; lately 11 a' i from 50 to 75 cents per gallon. When ! purchased of local druggists, it should not cost more than $1 per gallon. One gallon when properly diluted is sufll- I dent to preserve 60 or 65 dozen eggs. For use dilute one gallon of this compound to 10 gallons, with pure, re cently boiled water. Mix thoroughly and when cool pour the solution Into earthenware jars of convenient size for the storage of the egg; .Stand the jars tn a cool cellar or basement and place In them only freshly laid eggs. The eggs may be kept In the solution or merely dipped into it several times and then stored in a cool, dry place. In ilther case, the pores of the shells will j be so effectually closed as to prevent the entrance of air and the agencies >• ’i.eh effect deca}’. So treated, they ; v ill keep perfectly for five or six ■ months, and even longer. The importance of this fact becomes 1 ipparent when another is recalled: the I market price of < ggs during the sum mer months seldom exceeds 20 cents, while during the winter months it ranges up to 60 and 65 cents per dozen. By the use of water glass when eggs are cheap the average family can. with no small percentage of profit on the In vestment. easily control the situation. Orpingtons.
