Farmers, as a rule. are mo>-e 4 / , prosperous no v /'l/Zc’/cf than ever before. But there is one j > thing farmers an !' rusty on, and tha t is the poultry question. The //»/? farm flock is gen- IHi erally made up of a conglomt c.ion » > . of nondescripts, i OUItKV no two alike in color. shape or any of the char- /)/>///') 4 • acteristics that xXrZLtfZf are supposed to belong to the hen, except they will lay a few eggs in the spring before they settle down to set the rest of the sum mer. The farmer considers the whole poultry family a nuisance and wishes them all to kingdom come, while the busy wife fusses and feeds the motley multitude, hoping some day to be able to convince her husband that there is money in poultry raising. There is money in poultry, hut It seems to take the farmer a long time to realize that there are greater possibili ties In raising pure-bred poultry than in any other stock. It is not because the farmer Is close or stingy; the improvement in the rest of his stock is testimonial enough to the contrary. It may be that if each fowl had a pedigree as long as a log chain tacked to it, the farmer would notice them. A flock of choice, pure-bred poultry would attract the attention of people passing, and a slate on a post near the road describing whatever you have for sale and giving prices Is sure to bring results all the year around. No one will get rich right off. but poultry will bring in a lot of easy money. Where egg production is the main feature, the smaller breeds will be found the best. They also are great foragers and secure the creator a mount of their own feed, while the larger va rieties do not hustle so efficiently. The largest egg farms all over the United States are stocked with Single Combed White Leghorns because of their great laying propensity and the production of pure white eggs. Since they are non-sltters, they are a paying proposition. Inbreeding should be carefully avoid ed and line breeding Is too complicated for the busy farmer and his wife. So whatever breed Is selected some relia ble poultryman should be responsible for them. Thus reliable new blood is introduced Into the flock with very lit tle expense Inland Poultry Journal.
