while had one-tenth of the ingenuity,
time and money aforesaid been spent
on devices for labor saving in natural
incubation the results would have been
simply stupendous, too.
< ommonly incubation advice is pub
lisned in late winter or early spring,
but at the South October. November
and December are good months for
hatching.
There are as many methods of man
aging setting hens as there are of kill
ing eats. In ordinary cases, when only
a dozen or two hens are set in a year,
almost any old way will do. My uncle
had away about as simple as can be
and followed it all his life. He was a
farmer and his fowls ran at large, a
few inviting boxes, barrels and cubby
holes being provided In positions handy
for him to get at. He let the setter
stay in the nest she had been laying in
and never tried to shut others off from
laying to her.’* The setter’s eggs he
marked in ink. with a plain coarse line
entirely around each egg. and numer
als. also in ink, showed day of month
due. He fed twice a day and at the
second feeding, when the sun was about
half an hour high, he called lustily.
Pretty much every setter around the
sapworks would leave the nest. Then
he visited each nest, setters and all for
the regular daily egging. If a setter
had not left her nest, he would lift her
off. Sometimes there would be one.
two or three unmarked eggs.
That plan wouldn’t do in a warm cli
mate where eggs must be gathered
several times a day, but this was in
Massachusetts. “Do not setters fight
with layers and raise the dickens?”
"Mine don’t." he would answer. "They
have enough Asiatic blood in ’em to be
peaceable, and if 1 find one once in a
great while which is mean, all 1 do is to
cut her wattles off close under her chin
so 1 will know her. then when a good
time comes I shut her up by herself a
week and feed her on nice stuff, then
eat her."
The foregoing plan is very primitive
and elementary. No new nest and no
new range for the setter are required,
and there is no catching and moving
her. trying her with dummv eggs to see
if she will stick, and all that. The
advantages and disadvantages are ap
parent at a glance.
REQUISITES.
Among a number of requisites, the
chief and most important is freedom
and plenty of room to run. and run
rapidly. Even if there is yard for her.
the maximum of good will not be af
forded unless the yard is a large one. or
one narrow but quite long will do. Na
ture teaches her to run like sixty every
day and to use her wings vigorously
also. Sometimes she will fly quite a
distance, if of not too heavy a breed,
and sometimes she has a penchant for
fixing up to a high perch or high place
of any kind and down again. Anything
to bring into play the muscles of legs
and wings. There is a meaning to this.
There is a close connection between the
use of these muscles and the proper
activity of the bowels. A proportion,
and sometimes quite a large propor
tion. of setters confined in cramped
quarters show evidences of constipation
and diarrhea by turns, and wilt foul
their ne«ts. This mishap is the mean
est. most detestable scrape, in the whole
routine of fowl keeping front A to iz
zard. and has put more bricks and
boards into immense walls of incubator
factories than any other one thing.
There are other requisites, but none
so important as opportunity and In
ducement for running and flying. A
chance to come off nt any time of day
and as many times a day as she pleases
and go hack when she gets ready, is
desirable. Sometimes she needs not
merelv time for eating, drinking and
exercise, but wants to indulce in a
quite lengthy dust bath. When the
weather is cold, nature teaches her to
stay off only a short time, but when it
is very hot she knows enough to keep
off hours at a time. It is better for
her and for the eggs. too.

IN OUR opinion. Marietta street is
the next street to get enhance
ment. It will naturally follow the
physical developments that are now
being made on that street, together
with the completion of the Bell
wood avenue viaduct, which is now
being built.
We call especial attention to 2
large corner lots between the via
duct and North avenue.
Over a quarter of a million dol
lars worth of land has been sold on
this street within the last week,
and it Is safe to predict that in the
next year over two million dollars
worth of property will be sold on
this street. There are now over
$20(1,000 in new buildings under
way.
We believe that the lots referred
to above will make you big money.
