Poultry, Pet and Live Stock. i, Centerville, Tenn. Advice From the Poultry Doctor i single-comb Brown j By A. F. Pearson, ) As a means of ; diversion and rec reation after busi ■ ness hours, I do not know of anv t thing that equals , a few minutes t spent in the poul ; try yards, besides there is the nice, plump hen that > one can have for Sunday dinner and the nice, large. • white eggs to be t had at any time . with some to spare, especially I it' you breed the • Leghorn. , h . 9 ° r beauty and grace of carriage, I tnink they have no equal and they cer tainly stand in the front rank as egg ! producers. Among the well known va rieties of standard bred .'owls that are great egg producers. Brown Leghorns seem to be the least appreciated. It is surprising to me, because there is no better variety on which to display one s art in breeding. There is a fas cination in controlling color values. In the pullet line there are ho colors, but a blending of half-tones. O I hey are a hardy fowl; therefore, easy to keep, and I claim they will lay more eggs for the amount of food given than any other breed, but they will not stand for neglect. The missing of a few meals will diminish the size of eggs and cause a falling off in number. Few novices seem to realize that the pullet should lay as well in the early winter months as in the latter part, and they would if they were properly cared for. The secret of obtaining spring re sults in winter is to give them spring treatment; hence, they must, be prop erly housed, have fresh beefscrap, which is a substitute for worms, and sprouted oats, a substitute for green food. Win ter housing seems to be the problem, and even here in Tennessee there are three or four months of the year when it is necessary to keep the poultry housed. If they are compelled to scratch all the grain from a deep litter, there by getting the necessary exercise, there will be little falling off in egg produc tion, if any. A house 16 by 30 feet will accom modate 50 or 75 pullets. In this climate the walls need not be double, just plain, undressed lumber will do, but it should i be well stripped to keep out drafts. 1 This is next in importance to sunlight. The houses should face the south and should be eight, feet in front and six j i feet in back. It should be of the cur . tain front type, having two curtained | windows, each three by ten feet. This ■ ! allows the direct rays of the sun to j ■ reach every’ part of the interior some | time during the day. Muslin is prefer- I able to glass, ’for when closed in cold 1 weather it will not cause the house to be damp, thereby making the fowls run the risk of colds and frozen combs. The windows should be close only on windy days.—Reliable Poultry’ Journal. Orpingtons. i BLACK ORPINGTONS —Cocks, hens, cockerels, pullets; summer prices. Marietta street is the next street to get enhance ment. It will naturally follow the Physical developments that are now being made on that street, together with the completion of the Bell wood avenue viaduct, which is now being built. We call especial attention to 2 large corner lots between the via duct and North avepue. Over a quarter of a million dol lars worth of land has been sold on . this street within the last week, and it is safe to predict that in the next year over two million dollars worth of property will be sold on this street. There are now over $200,000 in new buildings under way. We believe that the lots referred to above will make you big money. For particulars, see either Mr. Eve or Mr. Hook. IF YOU HAVE MONEY TO LOAN.
