Alabama St. B REASONS FOR FOTTLFS BMLECTIOI Given by Representative Citizens from Every Section of the State The follow ing address has been issued to the people of the state of Georgia by a committee of prominent citizens, rep resenting the various sections of the state: At the primary election to be held on August 21. 1912, Hon. J. R. Pottle will be a candidate for re-election to the posi tion as judge of the court of appeals. The undersigned, acting for ourselves, but also as a committee selected by his friends from the various sections of the state, feel that our acquaintance with Judge Pottle, and with his qualifications, attainments and work justifies us in submitting to your consideration the following statement and reasons why, in our opinion, it is to the best interest of the people of this state that he should be retained in his present position: First and toremost should be mentioned his eminent qualifications for the position. He is a lawyer of unusual ability. Melias he judicial temperament" in a marked degree. His career has been such as to give him special training for the charac ter of work required in this office. For a number of years he was one of the law clerks in the supreme court, and he fol lowed this with several years of active and varied practice; and at the time of his appointment xvas universally recog nized as one of the most upright, skillful and successful lawyers in the state. While he has been on the bench for only a little more than six months, a close examination of tire opinions he has ren dered will show that xve are fully justified in the high estimate which we have placed tt;»on his ability as a judge. We further commend him as a polished gentleman of high personal character, strict integrity and unusual intellectual attainments. It seems to us that the present oppo sition to him is very untimely. It lias been the custom—a good custom as we see it. anti one that commends itself to all fair-minded thinking people, tliat an ap pointee to an office of this character should have the opportunity of perfecting his career and of showing what is in him before he is called upon to contest for his position; and especially should this be true of one who shows so much prom ise of usefulness, and against whom naught can be said: as is true in the ease of Judge Pottle. The present opposition to Judge Pottle is against all precedent. »a«—» CLEVELAND-MAN NIN G 11 ■■ »—i PIANO SALE Attention of Schools, Colleges, Homes. It is with pardonable Pride The Southern States Life Insurance Company presents the above report from the weh known New } ork actuary. General Agents wanted for unfilled territory. Local Agents wanted in ull territories. ’ ’ The Southern States Idle Insurance Co. ATLANTA. ga. r s - Mcleod, Supervisor of Agents WILMER L. MOORE, Pre*. fOT State Os GeOl gia That it is manifestly unfair to ask Judge Pottle to give up the position to 1 another at this time appears when wo recall that the office was tendered to hint without solicitation on his part, and that being urged by his friends to undertake this work he gave up a large and lucra tive practice: and yet, now within less than a year, he is asked to give up the judgeship, notxvithstanding his service has been so satisfactory. While there is no law against all three of the Judges of this court being selected from the same county or from the same section of the state, still It Is the part of wisdom that the judges should be se lected, so far as possible, from different •sections. It should be kept-in mind that there are a number of questions of law constantly arising in each section of tha state which do not arise in the others. The practice in the cities is very different from the practice in the country counties: the city laxvyer may be wholly unfamiliar with many classes of cases constantly arising in country practice, and vica versa: so that the members of the court should be selected with this diversity in view At present the court of appeals is composed of three judges: one is from Atlanta, one from Walton county, within fifty miles of Atlanta, and Judge Pottle is from south Georgia. Judge Pottle's opponent is from Atlanta; and, if he werel elected, there would not be a man on the bench to represent that vast section of the state which lies south of Atlanta Believing that Judge Pottle’s re-elec tion is demanded, not only by every ar gument of fairness and expediency, but by the needs of the bench Itself, we com mend him to the peopie of Georgia for his ability, his honesty, his integrity, his experience, his special fitness for the wor< and ask for him your cordial support at the coming primary.
