I ATLANTA SUBURBAN REALT Y ( UM I’A \Y. Poultry, Pet and Live Stock. A dvtce From the Poultry Doctor Every year in ’ the month of Au gust the biddies ■ "go on a strike." When we make - our egg-gathering i tour of the houses 1 in the evening we r find only an egg ’ here and there in ? nests that earlier ’ in the season were I well filled when . we visited them. No longei are 1 our egg baskets overflowing with > "hen fruit," and ' consequently small are our poultry profits just now. Are we discouraged and disgusted ’ because of this state of affairs in our ’ poultry business? Not at all. We ■ know the biddies must have a rest some time during the year, and, considering ; how well they answered our requlre . mints for eggs for hatching all through the hatching season, we do be grudge them the needed rest. Some of the hens are burdened with family cares and surely taking care of a fam ily of growing chicks is enough to en gross their time and constant atten tion without doing anything in the way of < gg production. Then, others of our females were not allowed to assume family cares when they showed an inclination to <lh so early in the season, and now they are again “broody:’* therefore, these broody ones are among the “strikers." Still others have commenced to dis card the old soiled, ragged plumage that the bright, smooth, beautiful coat may be put on in its place. It would be unreasonable to expect one of their sex to go on in the old daily routine of work and productiveness when a "brand new suit" is in prospect. Surely our good biddies have earned a rest; and what is more, we owe it to them to make their rest as complete as pos sible. Oh, I know August, is the month when other creatures besides the bid dies feel much Inclined to "go on a strike,” but there is work in poultry houses and yards that must he done if we would make a success of the work. At this time of the year the cleaning of the foul and chick quarters is the poultry breeder's largest poultry task. We may not always feel inclined to at tend to this, but if we have regular times for doing It and go at it without wasting time, dreading the work, it is not such a "big job” after all—and It means so much to our birds.—Pro gressive Poultry Journal.
