De partment of Agriculture I In order to pro duci a superior 4 , quality of chicken A avtce flesh for hieh class buyers, man ager H o! th< poul- /v ayn ;1 > try ind egg pack- *■ ' Ing houses, for a number of years. , / 1 H ( chickens, produc ing the so-called I OU ItKV ens If these ' chickens were fed and fattened on • . ■ , i- would not be necessary for the packers to put them into a feeding station, but the bulk of the chickens produced on the farm are too thin to irmke flrst-class di'-ssed poultry without special fattening. The fanner could produce a much better qualitj of chicken ami make more money if he would feed his chick ens I' gnlarly before mark'ting, or con fine those to be marketed for two or thn e weeks, and feed freely either on corn or on a mixture of one part wheat shorts, two par'..- of corn meal and three parts of low-grade wheat flour. Broilers bring almost twice as much per pound than roasters when sold to the poultry packers, so that many farm ers would make more money if they sold their cockerels when they weighed from two to three pounds rather than to wait until Thanksgiving or Christ mas time, when there Is always a glut on the poultry market. All Varieties and types of chickens are fattened in this country, no special attention being devoted to developing strains or special types peculiarly adapt ed to fattening. Several breeds give good results in fattening, and these are pr< ferred by men who make a spe cialty of fattening poultry in the fol lowing ordei : Plymouth Rocks, W'yan dottes, Rhode Island Reds, 01 takt n as a whole, birds of the general purpose class. The poultry packers often pay from oin- to three cents a pound less for light weight hens, thus discouraging the farmer from k’ "ping birds of tile Medi terranean class, such as the Leghorn and Mlnorcas. Tin- common practice in poultry pack ing houses is to feed each lot seventeen days or less. The market or trade sup plied and the results secured by the h eder determine tin- length of the feed ing period. Most milk-fed ehickerfs are fed fourteen days, but results secured In feeding indicate that a more profita ble gain can be secured in a shorter feeding period, provided the same price per i«>un<l can be secured for tile fin ished product. As tile feeding season advances the tendency among feeders is to shorten Hie length of Hie feeding pe riod, reducing it as low as seven days in many eases. <'rate fattening from troughs is the method of feeding employed in this cquntry by most of the large fattening establishments. I'Totn six to ten chick ens are placed in the crate or battery and given it light feed at tile next regu lar feeding period. When the birds are large, not over eight should be placed in one division. Rations For Milk Feeding. Very good results in fattening are se en n <1 in tile following rations: (a) ('Ol nmeai (>ll lbs. Loa grade w heat flour. .... In lbs. (b > ('ornmetil r»R lbs. <>at flour .36 lbs. Tallow 6 lbs. (c) Wiieat middlings (shorts).. 5" lbs. I.ow grade a hegt flour 100 lbs. I'ornmeal 150 lbs Tile proportion of cornmeal in the third ration can lie increased in cool or cold weatiler. Milk is used entirely in mixing these rations, and is considered essential both in this country and in England. Con densed buttermilk Is used to a consid erable extent in fattening, with very good results. Fresh buttermilk, con densed buttermilk, and skim milk are preferred, in this relative order. The milk produces the bleach appe'trance ahleli Is characteristic of milk-fed chickens and Is a trade asset. The feed is mixed to tile consistency •>t thick cream or so that It will drip from the tip of a wooden spoon. In very hot weather it is advisable to mix the feed thinner than in cooler weather, and results apis-ar to indic ate Hint one feed daily of a thin mixture with one or two thicker feeds makes the best feed ing system. Tile percentage of milk used seems to depend on the kind of grains in the mixture, on the weathei and on tile feeder It varies from 55 to 70 per ient. and an average of 50 per eent. or a U ille higher, seems to give vm y good results A good niiinv birds (lie w lien on feed, especially during cer tain seasons. Tin loss is greatest dur ing hot summer weather, tvhen the birds become prostrated with Hie heat, and later during October anil November when m.int of the birds develop some form of sickness. Lessons From Crate Feeding. Some of the conclusions drawn from tile study of tlie fattening of poultry are given below : 1. The use of portable feeding batter ies is- more easily adapted to vary con ditions-. involves less labor, and turns the birds out in better condition than the stationary batteries. 3. Low-grade wheat flour is a more economical feed than oat flour in fat tening rations for chickens at the pres ent f>t ices of grain. 4. it took an average of 3.26 pounds of grain to make one pound of flesh, which cost 7.10 cents, while the aver age cost of feed and labor per -pound of gain was 9.09 cents. 5. The cheaper gains were made in the shorter periods (seven or eight days) and by the light chickens. 6. Hens make poorer gains than chickens in crate feeding, and are less profitable to fatten.
