14 I THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AXnNEW* PRQFtT—OEIORGiAN W/XINI ADS-USE FOR RESULTS WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 21. 1912. Poolltry 9 Pet and Lave Stock CARE OF BREEDERS. By F. W. HALLETT. There seems to be a difference of A j ■opinion regarding J'Xd'VlCt the care of the male birds that y, are to be held I' 1 1'CHH over for breeders, 1 a majority advo cating that they D.. be kept entirelj IHL separate from the females. Our ex- z-j ? perience with this / OUltf'V way proved very ' r expensive on two occasions. An ex- I ceptional bird of A-z'C/l /<// quality was taken from the breeding pen the last of June and kept in a good-sized yard and coop by himself until the pens were mated In January. The eggs from his pen the season before were nearly all fertile the last hatches made in June. The first fifty eggs saved from his pen in January tested 100 per cent fertile and we were congratulating ourselves and delighted to think that the keeping of the male bird from the females was the reason The next fifty eggs showd about 90 pr cent fertile and from that day on they got worse, until in March and April hie was unable to fertilize the eggs from even two hens We con cluded that it was his lack of vigor and discarded him The following year another valuable bird went the same way. A friend of ours who was a sort of well experienced man in the poul try game gave as the reason the fact that the bird when given the society of females after being away from them *o long went to pieces. We took hie advice and for seven long years always gave the male birds two or three cull hens for companions during the summer time, and never .had the same occurrence again. It seems to be nature for the fowls to have mates all during the season The quail, partridge, and all wild birds, 'have this privilege—and how many eggs did you ever find in a quail’s next that failed to hatch? I believe it is best to follow nature as near as we can in the handling of the male birds. Those females not intended for breeders we would place in summer In good-sized flocks and crowd them all that is possible for the best egg pro duction we can get. Try to make them lay enough eggs before they start the moult to at least pay for their keeping for the entire year, and if not to be retained for winter eggs dump them upon the market as soon as the slack comes in eggs, just prior to their moult. They can be made profitable for eggs up to the moulting period; but if not intended to be kept get them off your hands aw soon aw the egg supply gets low, thereby saving their feed neces sary’ to carry them through the moult. After all, it is the close attention to the little things that makes poultry raising profitable. Clean houses and yards, plenty of good feed In shape of grain, whole or ground meat and green food. Don't forget the charcoal and grit. —lnland Poultry Journal. Orpingtons. CRYSTAL White Orpington hens; one to three dollars; young stock; bargain prices to make room Write us Valley View Farm. IN AM IMS Americans Are the Most Gulli ble Investors in the Whole World. By B. C. FORBES. NEW YORK. Aug. 21.—We are In a fair way to get pure food, on all sides w e are promised pure politics and only recently a praiseworthy movement was instituted to give us pure Investments. The American Is the most gullible investor in the wtjole world This chiefly because— at least in his initial stages—he wants either some thing for nothing or an absurd lot for his money. He still foolishly fancies that fortunes are being dispensed by obscure promoters. • • » At least half a million dollars a day— probably a full million—is filched from de luded "investors” by swindlers. • • • The postoffice has done yeoman serv ice in imprisoning many of these fakirs. But it can not cover the whole field. It makes no effort at prevention; It neces sarily, confines Its efforts to curing ar, rather, killing, the guilty. The postal people can do nothing until the unscrupu lous promoter has got In his nefarious work. • » • The Investment bankers can go to the root of the evil. They do not have to wait until the false tree bears fruit. They can, so to speak, nip it in the bud. And ft is this they propose to do. A very in teresting series of meetings was held at the Waldorf recently. Over two hundred bankers whose chief business Is to handle investments formed the Investment Bank ers Association of America. They propose to establish a bureau of investigation to which all proposed underwritings will be submitted. • • • The new bureau will give its O. K. to meritorious projects, but will stamp its disaprovaJ upon any scheme not worthy of public confidence and support. If properly carried out, this plan is capable of saving the people of this coun try scores of millions of dollars every year. Not only would fraudulent enter prises be rejected, but members of the as sociation —honest bankers—would be thus provided with means of thoroughly prob. Ing proposals put before them for con sideration. Sometimes an honorable firm is misled into lending Its name and influ ence to a project which it believes com mendable, but which full investigation would have shown to be questionable. • « . 1 was much impressed by the earnest ness of the bankers who assembled the other day. More than half of them were obviously under 35 years of age. I have seldom or never seen a more inspiring lot of men—clean-cut, wideawake, ener getic, intellectual looking, of superior manners and, if the phrase may be used of mere males, possessing an unusual amount of charm, the which J.
