YHF \TI.\NT\ GEORGIAN AN'DXEWS. READ FOR PROHT — GLORGIAN WANT ADS— USE FOR RESULTS PouHtry, Pet and Liive Stock CARE OF BREEDERS. By F W. HALLETT There seems to be a tliffei >n< e of A , •opinion regarding /i twice the rare of th< male birds that are to be held over for breeder- * ' a majority advo cating that the;, jL. be kept entire's I lit separate from the females. Oto <x- r~. pertetii . with this 10 It t tl‘V away proved very ' expensive on two occasions \n ex ceptional bird of quality was taken front the breeding pen the last of June and kept in a gooi-sized yard and coop I by himself until the pens were mated In Janua The eggs from his pen the season before wore nearly all fertile the last hatches made in June. Tha first fifty egg- saved from his pen in January tested 100 per eent fertile and we were congratulating ourselves anti delighted to think that the keeping of the male bird from the females was the reason Th. next fifty eggs showd about 30 pr eent fertile and from that I day on they got worse, until in March and April he was unable to fertilize the eggs from even two hens. We con cluded that it was his lack of vigor and discarded him The following year another valuable bird went the same way. A friend of ours who was a sort of well experienced man in the poul try game gave as the reason the fact that the bird when given the society of females after being away from them bo long went to pieces. We took his advice and for seven long years always gave the male birds two or three cull hens for companions during the summer time, and never had the same occurrence again. It seems to be nature for the fbwls to have mates all during the season The quail, pa trldge. and all wild birds, have this privilege and how many eggs did you over find in a quail's next that failed to hatch? 1 believe It is best to follow nature as near as we can in the handling of the male birds. Those females not intended for breeders we would place in summer In good-sized flocks and crowd them all that is poss: ile for the nest egg pro duction we .an get. Tty to make them lay enough eg before they start the moult to at least pay for their keeping for tip entile year, and if not to be retained sot winter eggs dump them upon the market as soon as the slack comes in > ggs. just prior to their moult. They can be made profitable for eggs up to the moulting period; but If not intended to be kept get them off your hands as soon as the egg supply gets low, thereby saving their feed neces sary to carrx them through the moult. After all, it i. the close attention to the littl. things that makes poultry raising profitable Clean houses and yards, plenty of good feed in shape of grain, whole or ground nvat and green food. FACT UNO GOSSIP IN MONH UNITS Americans Are the Most Gulli ble Investors in the Whole World.' By 3. C. FORBES. NEW YORK, Aug. 21. —We are In a fair way to get pure food, on ail sides we are promised pure politics and only recently a praiseworthy movement was instituted to give us pure investments. The American is- tlie most gullible investor in the whole world. This chiefly because—at least in his initial stages—he wants either some thing for nothing or an absurd lot, for his money. He still foolishly fancies that fortunes are being dispensed by obscure promoters. ♦ ♦ » At least half a million dollars a day— probably a full million—is filched from de luded "investors" by swindlers. ... The postoffice has done yeoman serv ice in imprisoning many of these fakirs. But it can not cover the whole field. It makes no effort at prevention; it neces sarily, confines its efforts to curing or, rather, killing, the guilty. The postal people can do nothing until the unscrupu lous promoter has got in his nefarious work. « « « The investment bankers can go to the root of the evil. They do not have to wait until the false tree bears fruit. They can, so to speak, nip it in the bud. And it is this they propose to do. A very in teresting series of meetings was held at the Waldorf recently. Over two hundred bankers whose chief business is to handle investments formed the Investment Bunk ers Association of America. They propose to establish a bureau of investigation to which all proposed underwritings will be submitted. « * • The new bureau will give its O. K. to meritorious projects, but will stamp its disaproval upon any scheme not worthy of public confidence and support. If properly carried out, this plan is capable of saving the people of this coun try scores of millions of dollars every year. Not only would fraudulent enter prises be rejected, but members of the as sociation-honest bankers—would be tints provided with means of thoroughly prob ing proposals put before them for con sideration. Sometimes an honorable firm is misled into lending its name and influ ence to a project which it believfrs com mendable, but which full investigation would have shown to be questionable. » » M I was much impressed by the earnest ness of the bankers who assembled the other day.
