Poultry, Pet and Love Stock
SOME POULTRY FIGURES.
By CHARLES F. CLARK.
This has been
A d'vice
Front
the
Poultry
' Doctor
another banner
year in the poultry
business, not only
from the point of
sales made, but In
the number of
eggs produced.
As far as hatch
ing records go
this has not been
the best year for
breeders. Ac
cording to reports
in general, the
hatches have not
been as good as
could have been
wished for.
The persons buying baby chicks have
had the best end of the deal and those
securing six-we-ks-old and three
months-old pullets will be still farther
ahead. At six weeks old the . hicks do
not need artificial heat unless real early
In the s-ason and as the danger is
practically over at this period and all
fear of white diarrhoea Is past it is the
best, and. In the end, the cheapest way
for the beginner to start in the busi
ness.
At six weeks old chances for mis
takes are reduced to a minimum and
the critical period is past.-
Those who go into the poultry busi
ness for eggs will b> bettei off to buy
their young stock each spring or sum
tier and retain them only during the
pullet year. Force th. tn and get the
eggs dYtring this period and then dis
pose of them to the butcher as soon as
their laying period is over and take
this money and buy another lot of
. 'ting stock. Say, you only get 50 or
75 cents each for your old fowls at
market and you put this money back
into six-weeks-old pullets—you are
then “even." They should average ten
or tn rive dozens per hen and at 30
cents per dozen, and say only ten dozen
pot hen, there is $3 per hen per yen,
les- their feed (pit it high a' $1.50;.
This leaves you $1 50 net per hen p<-
year. This $1.50 should buy the feed,
lice powder and Incidentals.
If a person had 1,000 hens, there is
*1.500 per year net profit on an invest
ment of SSOO or S7OO fop the first year's
young stock, and this will be realized
from the old stock at the end of the
year and reinvested in young stock
again.
Now, this Is not, making $1,500 from
60 hens on a city lot, nor is it making
$18,500 from 1.000 hens, and you are
not paying from $5 each for baby chicks
to $1,250 each for grown fowls either,
but you can make a comfortable little
living just the same.
By buying your young stock you
save the cost of brooders, lamps, oil,
incubators, brooder yards, incubator
cellars, and last, but not least, all the
work of feeding the baby chicks every
two hours and then losing, probably
from 25 to 50 per cent and half of the
remainder being cockerels. We might
also add the feed bill while young.—
