Poultry, Pet and Live Stock A BOOST FOR DUCKS. By Charles F. Clark, I want to say something about ducks. When it i comes to eggs. 1 they make the 1 Leghorn go on the 1 nest twice some I some days to keep in the race. A« long as the young ! ducks are kept away from the water (only al lowing for drink ing purposes, keeping it covered or in automatic fountains, so they can only get their bills in it) they are the easiest ami surest of al! fowls to rear, and they grow the t.istest. At ten weeks old they are fully feathered and have reached almost their full weight. From a market standpoint, the Pe kins art the most profitable of al! 1 breeds It costs us an average of 25 cents each to rear to ton weeks old at an average weight of from five and a half to six pounds and they sell at from 12 to 25 cents per pound, according to time of year. We figure on a net profit of 40 cents per duck at ten weeks old or just three land a half months from the time the ,-ggs are set. This Is from the late -1 hatched ducks—-cri rlier hatched bring | more. This is S4O per 100 ducks and ■.n il Pekin hen will lay enough eggs between February 1 ami July 1 to hatch 75 to 100 ducklings \ Pekin hen will j l;iy from 120 to 150 eggs per season if fed and eared for ptoperly. Our Indian Runners that wore hatch ed February 2 this year began laying at ■ four months and ten days, or June 12. . A Runner hen lays from 180 to 240 eggs 1 per year, according to her strain, care and feeding. Every poultryman or : farmer should have at least a few ducks. The Runners are not so de- j sirable for market purposes, as they weigh only about four pounds each, but their flesh is excellent, having* a ' slightly darker tint ami a trifle more of ; a natural wild flavor than the Pekin. : Both the Pekin and Indian Runner ; ducks are highly palatable for table I purposes and their eggs have the same flavor as b<n eggs, although they are a trifle larger in size and the shells are snow white. If ducks are fed fish or allowed to run to a pond where there are tad- 1 poles, the eggs will have an unpleasant ] taste the same as hen eggs will, If fish . is fed. 1 The Buff Orpington duck Is a new variety. Birds of this variety are buff in color, of a very quiet nature and not so noisy as the Pekin ami they are • claimed to have egg records over and 1 above the Runners. I am not going to say much about these ducks until I 1 have thoroughly tested them The duck is fast coming to the front and they deserve the credit they get.—North west Poultry Journal ■4-L—.■— - J Orpingtons.
