When Fred Merkle, of the Giant team, smack ed the ball over left field fence with Doyle and Murray on bases he won a hard fought game for the New York team from Pittsburg. The score was 3 to 2. and, except in this inning, McGraw's men were helpless before the Pirate hurler. Both clubs used two hurlers and to the grand work of Mathewson the Giants can attribute their victory. He relieved the failing Wiltse in the last of the seventh and held Fred Clarke's men safe to the finish This gives the Giants four straight Vic tories over the Pirates and makes it look extremely doubtful if their lead will ever be overcome by the Cubs. A team which can win four games in a row from the Pirates in their present strong condition will hardly be headed in the National league this year. FIRST INNING.
