CARING FOR THE HALF-GROWN
CHICKENS
Bv E. B. TEMPLER.
Some times we
think that when • j
we have coached (17.' IC C
the chicks through
the trying period —I
of the first few K
weeks we can
rest on our oars
and watch things /Z,zs
If we continue I TIC
this policy we
make a great mis- i
take, for there rOU itfy
must be continu
ous care, if we at e
to have the best of / Jnrfni
stock in the fall
It is commonly
known that the chirk < nat.tes tts feath
ers several times during is *x .
The first downy feathers are lost soon
after incubation, and there cornea a new
coating of small feathers Later these
seem to change, and then the wing
feathers come out Later on m t >l * > '
son you will find lots of feathers in the
runwavs and coops which indicate that
the birds are losing some of their
feathers. Now. during this change it Is
necessary that the birds have good food
properly balanced. They need food tha
will help in the growth of feathers and
bone« Wheat bran, a small quantity of
oil meal, and of beef scrap combined
with other foods, will give them what
they need, and they will grow and do
well throughout the season
One thing that is often neglected is
the providing of shade for the growing
stock This must be arranged for re
gardless of what other work may de
mand vour attention. The hot summer
sun will soon spoil the plumage and
cause the birds to droop and stop grow-
ITI . x 1 a
The supply of green food in nt its
height now and should be fed liberally.
Give some three or four times daily.
The garden will supply lettuce, Swiss
chard cabbage, and various things
which the birds will readily eat. This
supply of green food should not be per
mitted to get low. and w-hen you see
that it is diminishing too rapidly, sow
more of the Swiss chard and lettuce for
later use ....
The matter of supplying drinking
water for the half-grown chicks Is
somewhat of a problem Probably tbe
best way of solving this problem Is to
get the work down to a regular routine.
How many times you have gone out to
the coops where the youngsters were
and found that they had no drinking
water in the fount. Probably they had
been without it for several hours. If
you will have several appointed times
during the day to go out and refill the
founts, you will have no trouble about
the matter. The chicks must have fresh,
cool water. It is a poor plan to give
them a whole day's supply at once. It
soon becomes warm and Is worse than
no water at all. In fact, they will not
drink this tepid water w'hen the day is
warm. You will notice w hen you go to
refill the founts that when you throw
it out and put in fresh, they will all
crowd up to where they can get a
drink.
With good care and proper feeding of
light foods, the chicks will get through
the summer in fine shape, and mature
into big birds in the fall. Poultry Re
