TTTF vn.Zx-TA GFORGIAN AND NF’.VS. REAP FOR AN WANT ADS—USE FOR RESULTS Poultry, Pet and Live Stock CARING FOR THE H A LE-GR< >\VN CHICKENS By E. B. TEMPLLR. Some times " think that when x we have coached tlx. iCt the chicks through the try ing period . , of the first few rrom weeks we can rest on our oars and watch things .7 If we continue Hit this policy we make a gnat mis take. sot there ['OllltlV must be continu ous care, if we are to have the b. st of / )Q( tnr sttx’k in the fall 1 " It is commonly known that the ■ hl ’k • ers several times during ■ The first downy f< ath< ' c sc after incubation, and there eo>„. s a new coating of small feathers Later these seem to change, and then the wing feathers come out. Later on in the sea son vou will find lots of feathers In the runways and coops which mdicate that the birds are losing some of the r feathers. Now. during this change it is necessary that the birds have good food properly balanced. They need food that will help in the growth of feathers and bones When! bran, a small quantity or oil meal, and of beef scrap combined with other foods, will give them what they need and they will grow and do well throughout the season One thing that is often neglected is the providing of shade for the growing stock This must he arranged for r»- garllcas of what other work may de mand your attention The hot summer mm w'ill soon spoil the plumage and cause the birds to droop and stop grow- ths supply of green food is at its height now and should be fed liberally, (jive gome three or four times daily The garden will supply lettuce. Swiss chard cabbage, and various things which the birds will readily eat. This eupply of green food should not Ire per mitted to got low. and when you see that it is diminishing too rapidly, sow more of the Swiss chard and lettuce for later use The matter of supplying drinking water for the half-grown chicks Is somewhat of a problem. Probably the be®t way of solving this problem is to get the work down to a regular routine. Hov many times you have gone out to th® coops where the youngsters were and found that they had no drinking wat»r in the fount Probably they had been without It for several hours. If you will have several appointed times during the day to go out and refill the founts, you will have no trouble about th* matter. The chicks must have fresh, cool water. It Is a poor plan to give them a whole day’s supply at once. It ■oon becomes warm and is worse than no water at all In fact, they will not drink this tepid water wb*n the day is warm. You will notice when you go to refill the founts that when you throw it out and put in fresh, they will all crowd up to where they can get a drink With good care and proper feeding of light foods, the chicks will get through the summer in fine shape, and mature into big birds in the fall- Poultry He view. — R.
