Advice the Poultry Doctor Too many peo ple have the Idea that it requires lots of room or absolute free range to raise poultry success fully. Lots of room is good and free range is better, especially for the growing stock, but I am sure that the average city man or woman can keep a small flock of hens on n lim- ited space. During the present Beason, partly as an *xp<-rl mont, J have kept a pen of Buff Or pingtons In a house six feet squire, with that amount of floor space, a dropping hoard under the roosts and six feet square of yard roofed In. I nls particular pen has produoetl as many eggs as any' pen 1 have and Is in as good condition now as birds on range. My city friend, you certainly <an spare a parcel of ground six by twelve feet can you not? You can invest from IS to’ J 5 In an empty piano box and materials to build a small poul try house, can’t you? Sure thing. Most every one could do this much. Anyway, here are a few directions Get a common piano box They can be usually purchased for $1.50 to $2.50 each; a roil of two-ply tarred pa per, which can be purchased.from 50 to 75 cents a roil; some nails, your ham mer and saw and begin. Lav. the piano box on Its bark on some suitable temporary foundation (such as a oottple ; of two by four pieces) with tin sloping portion to the top and south. Take out the sloping piece and hinge it at the top or upper side; pull all the boards out of the south end except one at top and bottom, and cover with a piece of muslin; cover the top anti sides of the box with the tarred pa per. Make a nest box or two and set In one corner and your coop Is about completed. If you care to, you can lit a wire covered or muslin covered frame under the sloping door and prop open your door as may bo necessary, a> ■ ord- Ing to weather and temperature Now. about 36 feet of 6-foot wire netting and six or seven posts ar? a gate are all that you need. By laying the piano box down on its back you have something like 25 square feet of floor space which is ample for six to ten fowls on the in tensive plan. The main tiling Is to keep the quarters dean and abcut three or four Inches of dry litter in > the bottom. Next get your birds. You can buy [yearling hens of fair qualltj now of reliable breeders fit a Ilttb more than market price. Settle on thoroughbred? as It will be to your interest and en joyment to own them. For these kind of quarters I should recommend the larger or quieter breeds, such as the American breeds, the Asiat ics or the Orpingtons. A coupii of sacks of feed ami your table scrap will feed a pen of six or eight hens a long time, and if you feed and water them carefully and do your part, you may confidently expect to get from two to six eggs a day. A few nice, fresh eggs, eggs that you can swear by a> being strictly fresh, form tiie basis of a pretty good breakfast. One for your wife and two for yourself, of course, and i there are a few ''kiddies" you may have to In crease the size of your flock and the quarters. I should like to sec every family throughout our cities and villages; where it is at all possible, keep a small flock of poultry. There is nothing that will pay you a higher rate of in terest than investing a small amount of your earnings in this way. Nou i - the time to get busy. Today Poultry Item.
