Advice
From
the
Poultry
Doctor
Too many peo
ple have the idea
that it requires
lots of room or
absolute free
ranee to raise
poultry success
fully. Lots of room
is good and free
' range Is better,
i especially for the
■ growing stock, nut
I am sure that the
average city man
or woman can
keep a small flock
of hens on a lim-
ited space. During
the present season, partly as an experi
ment, I have kept a pen of Buff Or
pingtons in a house six feet square,
with that amount of floor space, a
dropping board under the roosts and
six feet* square of yard roofed in. This
particular pen has produced as many
eggs as any pen I have and is In as
good condition now as birds on range.
My city friend, you certainly can
spare a parcel of ground six by twelve
feet, can you not? You can invest
from $3 to $5 in an empty piano box
and materials to build a small poul
try house, can't you? Sure thing.
Most every one could do this much.
Anyway, here are a few directions.
Get a common piano box They can
be usually purchased for $1.50 to
$2.50 each; a roll of two-ply tarred pa
per, which can be purchased from 50 to
”5 cents a roll; some nails, your ham
mer and saw and begin. Law the piano
box on its back on some suitable
temporary foundation (such as a couple
of two by four pieces) with the sloping
portion to the top and south. Take
out the sloping piece and hinge it at
the top or upper side; pull all the
boards out of the south end except one
at top and bottom, and cover with
a piece of muslin, cover the top and
sides of the box with the tarred pa
per. Make a nest box or two and set
in one corner and your coop is about
completed. If .you care to, you can fit
a wire covered or muslin covered frame
under the sloping door and prop open
your door as may be necessary, accord
ing to weather and temperature. Now.
about 36 feet of 6-foot wire, netting i
and six or seven posts and a gate arc
all that you need.
By laying the piano box down on its
back you have something like 25
square feet of floor space which is
ample for six to ten fowls on the in
tensive plan. The main thing is to
keep the quarters clean and about
three or four inches of dry litter in
the bottom.
Next get your birds. You can buy j
yearling hens of fair quality now of
reliable breeders at a little more than
market price. Settle on thoroughbreds
as it will be to your interest and en
joyment to own them.
For these kind of quarters I should
recommend the larger or quieter breeds,
such as the American breeds, the Asiat
ics or the Orpingtons. A couple of sacks
of feed and your table scraps will
feed a pen of six or eight hens a. long
time, and if you feed and water them
carefully and do your part, you may
confidently expect to get from two to
six eggs a day.
A few nice, fresh eggs, eggs that
you can swear by as being strictly
fresh, form the basis of a pretty good
breakfast. One for your wife and two
for yourself, of course, and if there are
a few "kiddies" you may have to In
crease the size of your flock and the
quarters.
I should like to see every family
throughout our cities and ’villages,
where it is at all possible, keep a small
flock of poultry. There Is nothing
that will pay you a higher rate of in
terest than investing a small amount
of your earnings in this way. Now is
the time to get busy. Todav Poultry
