Poultry, Pet and Live Stock
The getting into
form of the pullets
from which next
winter’s eggs an
expected should
be taken in hand
in earnest now.
Indeed, the man
who knows his
business pays at
tention to such
work right on
from the day the
youngsters leave
the shell. There
are. however,
many novices
added annually to
t'he already vast army of utility poul- !
try keepers, and it is for such that I
these notes are written. In the first
place, careful stock should be taken of
the pullets from which eggs arc expect- !
ou. if that part of the business has not I
already been seen to. Th. man who !
can raise a big bunch of birds ail of I
equal promise is yet to be horn for i
however well bred the stock may b.’,
culling more or loss will have to he per- •
form. d. Respecting the inherent egg- 1
producing capabilities of the voun --
aters, that essential factor to success
will not seriously call for consideration 1
during the time the birds are being '
"sorted out" if one knows that they '
have manated from pedigree nred egg i
producers.
The object of the poultry keepct :
should be to place in the laving quar
ters an even lot of birds eve;, in
growth, health and activity. Such
birds will have steered clear of sick
ness, will have feathered up kindly, and
developed muscular bodi. s and good
frames, and will be all alertness To
place In the laying quarters birds of ■
different ages, sizes and qualities Is to
prepare for winter egg production in a
haphazard manner.
The man who has kept an observant
eye on his youngsters during the rear
ing season will not be so handicapped
1n choosing the good from the bad
when making a final selection of the
most promising pullets, as those birds
which have shown physical or other de
fects will have been spotted and cleared
out in double quick time It Is the un
observant novice that will have the
most culling to do, and the best time
for him to do this work will be est. r
the birds have retired to roost. The
birds Should be handled carefully, when
it will be found that those which na
ture has endowed with high reproduc
tory qualities will feel compact, .'lose
feathered, musctt.ar, and especially so 1
about the thighs, and will be full'and
brilliant in eye The likely drones will
handle flabbily, and these should be rel
egated to the oven or other safe place,
for It may be taken for granted that
pullets devoid of muscular development
so near the laying season will prove
unprofitable subjects throughout the
winter months. The chicken which na
ture has fashioned for the production
of eggs 1n plenty can, under healthy
conditions, no more escape the desire
to scratch a.nd get muscularly hard than 1
the "live wire" in the poultry business
can esc.’pe the desire to hustle and got
rich.
Having selected a nice oven hunch of
birds, see that they are relegated to
clean, airy and roomy quarters, re- i
memnerlng that autumn and winter in
clemencies will not . ssitate much con
finement to the shelters, and if the lat
ter are cribbed and stuffy, their ten
ants will sicken and prove profitless.
I am not a great believer In the com
bined house and scratching shed for the
sheltering of laying stock during the 1
autumn and wlnt. r months, as, after
roosting time, the birds got little
change if the weather prevents outside
foraging. An open front house, with a
roomy scratching shed attached. Is. in
my opinion, preferable, allowing as It
* does greater freedom, exorcise, fresh
air and means of sanitation. If the
birds are provided with outside forag
ing ground, they can. b< fore being let
out into the open air on dry. cold morn- ’
Ings, be first fed In the scratching shed,
and so the sudden change from . a
roosting house to the open air will bo
avoided, as the change, byway of the
scratching shed, will be gradual.
Before housing the pullets, thorough
ly disinfect the st ruetun - and well lit
ter the floor of the scratching shed, i
• Also be sure that the ventilating ar
rangements are right -1. e.. capable of
being adjusted according to climatic
conditions During the autumn and
winter months Old Sol forgets to smile
very often, but when ho does smile his
smile should be allowed to shine on the
Interior of the roosting house, for. be I
It remembered, his smile is fatal to the
development of disease germs, and is a
great factor in the Insurance of dry- 1
ness in the structure Poultry Item
