THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NF.WP. Poultry, Pet and Live Stock AdvtCC From the Poultry Doctor The getting into form of the pullets from which next winter's eggs an expected should be taken in hand in earnest now. Indeed, the man who knows his business pays at tention to such work right on from the day the youngsters leave the shell. There a re, however, many novices added annually to the already vast army of utility poul ■ry keepers, and it is for such that these notes are written. In the first place, careful stock should he taken of the pullets from which eggs are exp< • t. ed, if that part of the business has not ■ alreadj been seen to. The man who can raise a big bunch of birds all of equal promise is yet to be born far however well bred the stock mav be culling more or less will have to be per- I formed. Respecting the inherent • gg- ‘ producing capabilities of > sters. that essential fa tor t s U ..« will not seriously call for instore . ■ during the time th« I rli in sorted out" If one knows that thei have manated from pedigree nr- ’ egg producers The object of the poultri keeper : shouic be t plant ters an even lot of birds—even tn growth health and actlvitj Such birds will have steered clear of sick ness, will have feathered up kindly ind Seveloped muscular bodl. s and good frames and will be all alertness To place in the laying quarters birds of different ages, sites and qualities is to prepare for winter egg production in a haphazard manner. The man who has kept an observant eye on his youngsters during the rear ing season will not be so handicapped 1n choosing the good from the bad when making a final selection of the most promising pullets, as those birds which have shown physical or other de. sects will have been spotted and cleared out in double quick time. It is the un observant novice that will have the most culling to do, and the best time for him to do this work will be after the birds have retired to roost. The birds should he handled carefully, when it will be found that those which na ture has endowed with high reproduc tory qualities will feel compact, close feathered, museum r, and especially so about the thighs, and will be full and brilliant in eye. The likely drones will handle flabbily, and these should be rel egated to the oven or other safe place, for it may be taken for granted that pullets devoid of muscular development so near the laying season will prove unprofitable subjects throughout the winter months. The chicken which na. ture has fashioned for the production of eggs in plentt can, under healthy conditions, no more escape the desire to scratch and get muscularly hard than the "live wire" in the poultry business can escape the desire to hustle and get rich Having selected a nice even hunch of birds, see that they are relegated to clean, airy and roomy quarters, re membering that autumn and winter in clemencies will necessitate much con finement to the shelters, and If the lat ter are cribbed and stuffy, their ten ants will sicken iiml prove profitless. I am not a great believer In the com bined house and scratching shed for the sheltering of laying stock during the autumn and winter months, ns, after roosting time, the birds get little . hange if the weather prevents outside foraging An open front house, with a roomy scratching shed attached. Is. in my opinion, preferable, allowing as It does greater freedom, exorcise, fresh air and means of sanitation. If the birds are provided with outside forag ing ground, they can. before being let out into the open air on dry. eold morn ings. be first fed in the scratching shed, and so the sudden change from a roosting house to the open air will be avoided, as the change, byway of the scratching shed, will he gradual. Before housing the pullets, thorough, ly disinfect the structures and well Ut ter the floor of the scratching shed. I Also be sure that the ventilating ar rangements are right I e.. capable of being adjusted according to climatic conditions. During the autumn and winter months Old Sol forgets to smile very often, but when be does smile his smile should be allowed to shine on the | interior of the roosting house, for, be It remembered, his smile is fatal to the development of disease germs, and is a great factor in the Insurance of dry ness in the structure Poultry Item R I Reds.
