COUNCIL TO BURY
STOCKADE PLANS
Education Board Reverses Its
Opinion of University High
School on Site.
The chances are all against Mayor
Vinn succeeding in carrying out his
,lan to move the stockade from the
'hird ward, according to the attitude
f many city officials today.
The board of education unanimously
•commended to council that the four
ity high schools be sold and
igh schools for boys and girls be
iult on the stockade site. The adop
on of this would have necessitated an
nmedlate removal of the stockade.
The opinion of the board of educa
on virtually Is reversed today. In re
oonse to a widespread opposition to
le new' school plan, especially to a
iris high school in conjunction with
boys on the stockade property, some
» the members of the board are deter
minedly opposed to the plan and the
hers have lost their enthusiasm for it.
Indications today are that council will
try the recommendation of the board
' education for a university high
hool In a pigeon hole of the finance
>mmlttee when It meets Monday.
Citizens of the Third ward have been
•otesting that the stockade was a nul
nce and should be removed from the
efdentlal section. Mayor Winn de
ared that one of the principal projects
his administration would be to move
e stockade.
No Fund For New Stockade Seen.
The pressure for money for new high
hoole during the next few' years will
ike it exceedingly hard to get an ap
oprlatlon for a new stockade.
Mayor Winn’s plan was to sell part
the large stockade tract and use the
ids for a new stockade building. But
effort has been made to take this
f p during the two years in which a
w stookade has been an adminristra
n policy.
Vlderman James E. Warren, chair
in of the council committee on
iools. said that while he at first fa
"ed the university school plan, it was
pdble that he would oppose it when
fame to council. Waiter H. Rich de.
<red that he was unalterably opposed
building the schools on the stockade
e. A. P. Morgan said that he had
cnged hie mind and was now opposed
tit. Their reason was that the lo
con waa too far from the center of
t city.
he others declared that the princi
r reason for urging the building of
t new schools on this site was that
i.-as the only location available.
