Os course, I mean hens raised on a city lot and not on a farm, they are two different propositions. There are laying strains in every variety and I think certain localities affect different breeds in various ways. But it Is cer tain that all breeds require care to get the best results; you can not take care of fowls in any old way and get good results. Tame your fowls and never allow .them to be frightened Nervous, frightened fowls are never at their bes' Have plenty of nests for them. and. by the way, a five-gallon kerosene can •makes an excellent nest. Take a can opener and cut through the center of the side of the can and across each end. and then bend back one-half. In connection with this article I wish to make a few remarks for the benefit of those who have hens set as to care for the chicks. So often people come to us and say, "My hens kill half or all the chicks.” Now. this may he overcome to a great extent with moth ers. Nover set the small bleeds unless they are very tame and the weather Is warm, as there is not enough warmth In their little bodies to properly care for the chicks or hatch the eggs well. On the other hand, don't set exceed ingly large hens. After the chicks are patched and the hen Is ready to be put In a coop, take the hen from the nest, cover up the chicks and feed the hen •choice feed water her and give her jcharcoal, grit and green feed, then look ’her over thoroughly for lice, and w 11h a (feather apply blue ointment around the •vent and on the top of her head and ■under her throat and a very little on 'the under side of the wing feathers Your hen is comfortable and well cared for Then put her into the coop, but don't put any straw or dirt or anything »he can scratch, for some hens will everlastingly scratch If there is any thing to get at. In the meantime feed the little chicks and also give them water and fine charcoal (we water be fore feeding).
