GREA T WORK HERE TO BE
DONE AND I HOPE TO DO
TT SAYS DR. NTaRTHUR
Back from what he chooses to term a
I vacation but which sounds in the tell-
I l ing like eleven weeks of hard work. Dr
' Robert Stuart MacArthur, president of
the Baptist World Alliance and pastor
of the Baptist Tabernacle, is ready to
step unfettered into Atlantan religious
situation and. with the institutional
' force at his command, to continue and
'enlarge the work made famous by Dr.
I Len G. Broughton
Dr. MacArthur is confident that the
I storm which raged around his pasto-
I rate during his first months in At
' anta has spent itself. The enthusiasm
I w hich greeted him at last night's re
ception he takes as an Indication that
the threatened schism in the Tabernacle
congregation has been averted perma
nently.
No Word of Row.
At least. Dr MacArthur chooses to
i view that which is past lightly.
"Not a word of the discussion came
lto me during my vacation* said Dr
MacArthur today. "Nyr hive I heard
mention of it since my arrival in At-
- lanta 1 guess it is finished I never
I knew quite w hat It wa-s about, any
way. you know."
And last night's outpouring at the
Tabernacle more than substantiated the
minister's opinion. No divine, not
even Dr Broughton himself, who might
at times hare had Atlanta on a sliver
platter If he wanted It, ever received a
more generous welcome
Dr. MaeArthui s plan- for the fall and
winter work are still In embryo, but he
expects to plung. info the Tabernacle
work at once, now the congregation is
harmonious.
Atlanta's Progress,
Atlanta has shown marvelous prog
ress during the summer, ' he continued
"The Improvement in the streets is es
pecially notfeeabl ■ to rm-. 1 assume, be.
cause when I left the street In front of
the Tabernacle was torn up and the
sidewalks in bad condition I think
these down-town street Improvements
will help the eltj wonderfully.”
It suited Dr. MacArthur to talk to a
Georgian reporter! in a go-as-you-please
manner, and t<> a ca-ual observer this
conversational tendenct at once ap
pears as his most striking characteris
tic. There is a < ■ •.sniopolltanfsm about
his talk that is rare among members of
his profession.
He talked of his trip to Russia last
winter, w hep as president of the Bap
tist World alliance he gained permis
sion from the czar's ministers to estab
lish a Baptist church am! college in St.
Petersburg, a project which had met
with repeated failure.
From St. Petersburg ho came back
to his work of the summer, the vaca
tion he had spoken of. w hich consisted
of one Sunday at his old charge. Bap
tist Calvary church. Now York: ten
Sundays at the famous Tremont tem
