SLEUTHS TRAIL 3
SZABO ITOS’
Trio of Women Who Posed as
Parent of Dead Countess
Shadowed.
NEW YORK, Sept. 19.—Three wom
en, each of whom is under suspicion
of being the women who posed as the
mother of the Countess Rosa Menschik
Szabo in order that Burton W. Gibson
might obtain control of the estate of
the countess, are today oe'ng shadowed
by detectives in the employ of the Aus
tro-Hungarian consulate. One of these
women, who is particularly watched, is
suspected of having worn a gray "ig
when she appeared to sign the waiver
of citation by which Gibson unlocked
the bank accounts of the dead woman.
Two of the three women are under the
closest watch. One of them is under
stood to have come from Chicago, and
If is charged that she is now at the
Waldorf-Astoria hotel. The officials
who are making the. search for the
women refuse to give her name, and a
woman who answered the description
given indicates today that she was the
woman sought.
The woman from Chicago, according
to evidence in the hands of the con
sulate officials, was a friend to Gibson
in 1906, when he was involved in the
affairs of the late Mrs. Louise Stenton.
whose estate he handled and for the
murder of whose daughter, Mrs. Alice
C. Kinnan, he was held until released
by a writ of habeas corpus. This wom
an is supposed to have aided Gibson in
that crisis, and she is said to have come
to New York at the. present time to
again give him support.
Wife Defends Gibson.
Mrs. Burton W. Gibson, at her home
'in Rutherford, N. Y, today broke her
silence for the first time and defended
her husband, who is In jail at Goshen
N. Y., charged with the murder o
Countess Rosa Menschik Szabo Mr her
fortune.
•■I know my husband is innocent of
the terrible charges brought against
him," she declared. "I know him to be
one of the best and most honorable
men In the world. I have perfect faith
in him and I am going to stand by
him as long .as there is breath left in
my body.”
Mrs. Gibson had just returned home
from Goshen, where she conferred with
her husband in his cell over the con
duct of his case.
"If there are unfortunate circum
stances just at present.” she contin
ued, "that seem to other people to be
suspicious or to look bad for him, that
is just because, through no fault of
his own, he is the victim of some un
lucky coincidence, some malign acci
dent, that has thrown for the moment
the wrong light upon his actions.
"We have been married for 14 years
now, and we have always been very
happy together. We have just grown
up together, and that Is what makes it
so hard on both of us.”

Up and Dou)n Peachtree
Maybe You’ve
Seen This Gent.
He had red whiskers, two heavy grip
sacks. the remnants of three drinks and
a pair of feet which sprawled all over
the aisle. He climbed Into a car near
Five Points, squeezed through the sup
per time crowd toward the front of the
car and announced, indistinctly but
firmly, that he desired to emerge from
the Vehicle at the well known corner of
Peters street.
"AH right,” responded the conductor.
The car rounded a curve and the trav
eler pushed the button.
"Who wants this corner?” shouted the
conductor.
“I do," yelled the stranger, trampling
on nineteen pairs of toes.
"It’s a block farther on,” explained
the conductor. "Blang! blang!” sound
ed the bell.
The car reached that famous thor
oughfare and stopped. The conductor,
pushing through the crowd, tapped the
stranger,on the arm.
"This is Peters street,” he said.
"Fare, please.”
"What’s that!” demanded the travel
er. "Oh, you want my fare. All right,
sir; you shall have my fare. No, sir;
I don't never beat my way.”
He sat his grips in the aisle, mashing
several pairs of toes which his feet had
missed. He dug into one trouser pock
et and produced a corkscrew, a beer
opener and a nail. Then he reached
into the other and came up with a piece
of string. And the car was waiting.
"Come one,” said the conductor, im
patiently. "Go on! Start her up!” yelled
hungry passengers. But the traveler
persevered.
"Yes, sir; I’ll sure pay you my fare,”
he announced. He found his wallet and
looked inside, but returned It to its
place. Nothing doing!
"Aw, never mind the fare. Git off.”
said the conductor, reaching for the
rope.
“No, sir-ree,” quoth the traveler. ”1
kin pay my way, all right.”
Again he dived into an inside pock
et. This time he brought up a wad of
dog-eared documents. There were cig
arette coupons, bills, mining
stock, ancient letters. And from the
middle of the pack the red-whiskered
man drew forth in triumph—a .trans

One Way To Have
Two Dress Suits.
While one dress suit is enough for the
average young Atlantan, one young man
will have two this season, and he is not

"White folks, dis dress suit is gittin’

said the negro boy, who had been taking
his clothes to the pressing club, some days
ago.
"Yes," replied the young man. He
fixed a price, and the negro took the suit,
promising to tiring back the purchase
price.
"I’se trying to sell dat suit of yours,”
said the negro several days later, “but
you shore ought to come down a little on
dat price.”
Several times the negro reported that he

was always a little high.

POLICE PERMIT PAIR
WHO ROBBED BANK
0F5272,000T0 ESCAPE
CHICAGO, Sept. 19.—Patrolman and
detectives of the city force today are
searching for two men alleged to be
members of a gang of five that robbed
the Bank of Montreal of $272,000. The
police activity began when Chief Mc-
Weeney was told that the two crooks
were in Chicago and that two Chicago
policemen had known it and could have
made an arrest. The two policemen
are now facing charges of incompe
tency and may be removed from the
force.
w
An informant told Captain Mahoney
that the meh were in Chicago. He gave
details of the crime and the identity
and hiding place of the men. Captain
Mahoney could not go personally to
capture the men. Tt was inconvenient.
He assigned Lieutenant Burns. Burns
went alone instead of taking a wagon
load of patrolmen. The robbers were
found, but were not arrested. Instead
Lieutenant Burns was beaten and
kicked and the men vanished. The two
policemen who knew kept mum.
