H7zy / Took Up Poultry; Incidents of Early Work. Hl. During this period of the severities and early eighties the judging at the greater part of our fairs was done by compari- son and applied by three men of known integ rity. They were selec’ed at the last minute be fore the judging was to commence. One of the chief qualifications these men must possess was that they did not know any of the exhib itors. and could, therefore, show no partiality. They were usually men of good ability and sagacity in their own lines of business, but their education in poultry matters had been sadly neglected. So much so that it was not an uncommon thing for them to call the superin tendent to find out what certain varieties of chickens and ducks were called. As an exam ple of their work in the duck alley. I have actually seen them award first prize upon a pair of Pekin ducks as the best pair of Pe king. the best pair of Aylesbury, and best pair of common ducks, not knowing that it was one and the same pair. The game was played upon them by one of the hucksters traveling the rounds of the fairs. Yon have all heard of this kind of poultryman if you have not seen him. Thank fortune, his days are about numbered. Judging by such a famous trio xvos considered the a< me of perfection by the huckster. He was tight in clover when he was able to realize double upon a number of exhibits. But the poultryman who bred his own stock and was exhibiting it, and knew the value of it. and the value of winning a prize upon it, would not stand for such work very long I. for one. told the management of one of these big fairs that if I could not go into such an exhibit alone and do bet ter work than this crowd had been doing for years. It would not cost them anything, at least. In about two years 1 got just such a job, and, while my work xvas not perfect by any means. I can tell you that no one pair of ducks got more than one prize, and that feather - legged Wyandotte.’ and smooth-footed Cochins failed utterly under my first judging. There were a lot of kicks registered against my work, mostly by the fellows who had been working the three judges to their gain. Judging System Changes. The .single judge had a hard road to travel the first few years of his ex istence as a judge, hut it meant the bettering of the poultry industry, in which xve mere most Interested. When a fair tried the one-man sys tem one time, it xvas a "go." and no others need apply. These fairs were gteat marts of trade for the thrifty Judge Marshall will be glad to answer in this department questions on all points of all rearing utility and fancy poultry. He ran not undertake, however, to reply personally to such let ters of inquiry. Address Judge F. J. Marshall, College Park, Ga. Plymouth Rocks. Times have changed greatly in the manner of conducting poultry ex hibitions. both at the fairs and winter shows. At the best of out shows these days everything must be systematic. The cooping unit rm: all stock classified: entries closed before the stock begins to arrive; tiie cooping attended to promptly. so that the judging may h< commenced the first day of the shots and completed early in the game. s< that the prize cards may go up prompt ly. The judging is done by the single ex pert system. An exhibition may havt three or four of these judges employed but each one is assigned his special wot k to perform, so that there is no balloting or easting of lots among the Judges to see who will win the prizes. The responsibility is placed and each judge must father his own work and stand or fall with it. Our exhibitions are not only run on better and more systematic pian« than in former years, but there Is |»«s ten dency to try to win, irrespective of quality, than used to obtain.
