UP-TO-DATE JOKES
The painter was perched on the scaf
fold. thinking himself safe from prying
eyes, but the foreman, unseen down
below, had been watching his slow, me
chanical strokes for a good while.
'Mind you don't fall, painter!” lie
shouted up.
"Oh, that's all right, sir. I'm as safe
as the bank up here,' replied the star
tled painter.
"Asleep I meant." said the foreman,
as he strolled away, anti as the sound
of a faster beat of the brush reached
him, he knew the hint had been taken.
A certain minister had so amiable a
disposition that scarcely anything was
ever known to ruffle his temper. On a
Saturday night his garden was broken
into and his favorite apple tree, which
he much prized, was fobbed of its fruit
On the day following, after service, he
mildly referred to his misfortune, and
added:
"if any one present is acquainted
with the put Joiner of the fruit I beg he
w ill Inform 'him that he should retain it
for eight or ten days, when the tlavot
will be materially improved."
A young wife recently went into a
grocer’s shop and addresst d the grocei

A certain young man, who prided

castic sculptor at a studio supper
“So you're the chap," he said, on be

Not all of them." the sculptor re
plied. quietly.
A military gentleman, who could
swear better than he could play golf,
was flattered one day to find quite a

ing him around.
"I hope',” he said gallantly, "that I
play well enough to reward you."
