A Big Modern Egg Farm
PART TI. •
Careful records are kept of eggs at “Yesterlaid farm” on
monthly report sheets. It W(Bhld practically be an impossibility
to trapnest for the 3,500 hens ami pullets upon
this farm, but they get on track of good indi
vidual layers. These are taken out of the great
general flock and kept as breeders to produce
stock to build up, or, rather, td maintain the
genera] flock, as much attention is paid to get
ting males of known laying blood and active
and vigorous in make-up as with the females.
The managers of this farm believe in good
looking birds as well as good layers, and make
the statement that one of the most
popular and valuable bens upon the farm is a
hen with a score of over 96 points, and also
has* a record of having laid two eggs a day
upon two different days as a pullet and repeat
ing the same twice during the sec’ond year.
The writer has been frequently asked if he
believed such fish stories. I wish to state right
here that I had a Barred Rock pullet some years ago that laid
two eggs a day on two different occasions about two weeks apart.
The reason I happened to know
for a certainty is that I had her
cooped, conditioning her for the
show room and I was the sole at
tendant at the linte it occurred.
In speaking of this famous lien, Mr.
Lawtrey mentions the fact that she is
almost, a typical White Leghorn in
type, long in back with a low carried
tail, with good color and fine head
points. In breeding these selected fe
males to special males they are not
allowed to run together all the time,
but are put together for a few minutes
each day and then separated. They
use about all of the famous tested, se-
upon this farm during
the breeding season, with the certified
males to accompany them.
Mammoth Incubators,
They use the Mammoth incubators?
four with 15,000-egg capacity, but ex
pect to put in more anil larger ones
as they increase their capacity for tak
ing care of the layers.
Their aim upon this farm is to econo
mize on the labor question. They be
lieve that with the great laying houses
as described, each to accommodate
1,200 to 1.500 hens in but two rooms,
and the Mammoth self-feeding hop
pers, needing to be filled only at In
tervals of months, with the roosting
quarters upon the second floor all sand
ed, *o ’hat cleaning out there need be
dene only once a month or so, the time
saved in the curtailment of labor will
In itself make a handsome dividend.
It is the intention in the future to
Increase the housing capacity for grow
ing chicks, by building mammoth shel-
Judge Marshall will be glad to answer in this department
questions on all points of rearing utility and fancy poultry.
He can not-undertake, however, to reply personally to such let
ters of inquiry. Address Judge F. J. Marshall. College Park, Ga.
POULTRY SHOW WILL
BE A BIG FEATURE OF
GEORGIA STATE FAIR
MACON, GA, Sept. 23.—Great inter
est is being taken in the coming poultry
show which will be held at the Georgia
State fair here October 15-25 next. At
lanta will be well represented in this
department, for Asa G. Candler, Jr.,
will be there with 200 prize-winning
birds. This will be the tlrst appear
ance of Mr. Candler ami his display of
poultry and he is confident of keeping
up with the Atlanta standard and take
away many blue ribbons. He will have
a magnificent collection of the different
breeds from his poultry farm, including
all varieties of Bantams, Orpingtons.
Cornjsh Games, leghorns, Rhode island
Reda. Anconas and Barred Rocks.
Judges George Ewald, Percy A.
Cook and R. H. Plant will tie
the blue ribbons to the win
tiers. They have all had many
years’ experience in the poultry world
and their knowledge of fine fowls
should make it extremely hard to win
tlrst prize unless the bird actually mer
its it front all standpoints.
Atlanta will also tie represented in
the great live stock pavilion by Kini
ballville stock farm. W, B. Zimmer
has applied for space for two carloads
of fancy stock. In talking of the com
ing fair, Mr. Zimmer said he thought
that tile live stock show would compare
with any of the largest state faits of
this country. He expects to take off
ntanj first prizes in the coining show.
Tlie poultry show has been housed in
a new building which has verj wide
aisles, giving plenty of room for a large
crowd to mingle together and see the
birds to a good advantage Tito build
ing will be veßy tastefullv decorated
and with tlie 1.990 new coops that have
been installed will compare favorably
with any of the large shows of the East
The eliiekens will have plenty of air
and ventilation, this being the reason
for changing the location front the old
building, which was low and stuffy and
deprived the large crowgl front viewing
the chickens.

To Supplant Colony Houses.
This change is contemplated to sup
plant a lot of colony houses now in
use, but which Mr.-Lawtrey, the man
ager, asserts take"too much time to
look after g,nd depreciate too rapidly.
These range or colony houses, being
unlike the great roosting houses for
the layers, require cleaning quite often,
being so close to the ground that the
droppings become damp and tend to
free the ammonia they contain.
The fancy breeding stock side of the
farm is worked first.
Eggs in season are sold at remunera
tive* prices, with a r®nge according to
the quality of the stock from which
they come, and ranging in price from
$lO per hundred up to as much as $2.50
per egg. Surplus eggs are marketed
either in St. Louis or New York citv,
according to the market created by the
supply and demand at the time. In
the fail and early winter are their hey
days, for shipping fine breeding cocker
els t’t good prices, regulated, of course,
by the quality of the specimen.
"Yesterlaid PouUrv Farm” is located
near Pacific. Mo, in the midst of lifts
acres of rolling woodland. I predict
for this farm a successful future under
its experienced and efficient manage
ment, and see no reason why its scheme
could not be successful near Atlanta
and other Southern cities.
