Mi COUNTESS
DIED OF MUI
Gibson, Accused Lawyer, to
Produce Physicians Who’ll
Deny She Was Strangled.
GOSHEN. N. Y., Sept. 23.—Attorney
Burton W. Gibson today made known
for the first time the line of defense
which he will follow in attempting to
clear himself of the charge of murder
ing Countess Szabo’. He will maintain
that the countess died from asphyxia
by fright. This new theory, the ac
cused lawyer expects, will offset the
testimony of Dr. Otto H. Schultz, the
New York coroner's physician who
swore that death was caused by strang.
illation. Gibson claims that the condi
tions found by Dr. Schultz would be
caused by asphyxia resulting from
fright.
To further strengthen his'defense,
Gibson will produce two doctors Avho
were present at the autopsy, Drs. Hash
ing and King, of Hudson county, New
Jersey, who will swear that their ex
amination failed to corroborate Dr.
Schultz's statement that the countess
had died from strangulation.

jo The Hague tribunal.
Gfbson’s attorneys are confident that

CONSERMFION
AGENT OF PEACE
Mrs. Helen Black Tells of
Movement Against War at
World Congress.
GENEVA. SWITZERLAND. Sept. 23.
—ln an address on "I'he Natural Forces
in America Working Toward Interna
tional Peace." .before the Internationa)
Peace congress in session here, Mrs.
Elmer Black, chairman of the propa
ganda committee of the American
Peace and Arbitration league, declared
today that war as a means of settling
differences between nations will Won be
abolished. She said that there were
certain invincible forces working to
ward this end with little noise, but
with irresistible power.
Using conditions in America as an
example, she said in part: *
"There are certain great natural
forces working in America toward the
final consummation of yy orjd peace.
These natural forces are developing the
processes of social and economic evo
lution, through whi«h we are working
out our part in the world’s destiny.
"First among these I place the re
markable awakening of our people to
the general subject of conservation.
"We ate unquestionably alive to the
importance of conserving our material
add human resources, and this is a con
dition opposed to war.
"We are seeking riches and honor in
fields of commerce and science instead
of through military channels, and this
also is opposed to war.
"Vi e have learned the great power of
co-operation' in business dealings be
tween individuals, and this is opposed
to war between nations.
“The masses from which the human
engines of battle are most largely
drawn are getting a higher value upon
their own life and health, and this re
duces the chances of war.”
