Penciled Runner Ducks Judge F. J. Marshall: I was very much gratified to read in The Geor gian that you would be connected with this good paper in looking after the poultry department and I am sure the breeders of fine fowls wherever this paper reaches will always have the best of advice as to the rearing and treatment of their high-class birds. I am an exclusive breeder of the imported strain of (Walton) Indian Runner ducks and have some beautiful ones now on my run. I would thank you to inform me if the genuine English Pencils will be admitted to The American Standard in competition in our next show this winter. I am anxious to have this information, as I want to exhibit some of my birds at that time. Will appreciate a reply from you concerning this. Should the association pass up for this year the recognition of the Eng lish Standard Runners, will they at any rate be permitted to be exhibited in the show and in this case will the judges pass upon them with any prizes or blue ribbon awards to the best birds? Thanking you for this information in advance, and wishing you the very best of success in your new connection, I am, with kindest regards, Sincerely yours, Atlanta, Ga. J. H. E., JR. The American Standard of Perfection recognizes but one variety of Indian Runner ducks at the present lime, viz. the fawn and white. The Standard for sale now and just off the press is simply a corrected edition of the 1910 revision, and contains no changes in text ex cept where errors occurred. Although chairman of the water fowl com mittee for the next Standard revision in 1915. 1 am unable at this time to even predict what will be the outcome of the Indian Runner question. A number of prominent breeders want to see separate standards for the fawn and white, the English penciled and the pure while. Then there are others who want to see a fawn and white standard only, but allowing some penciling, while others want to see noth ing but the English penciled go in under the caption of Indian Runner Ducks. Os course, there is no doubt 'about the whites being ad mitted. as there seems to be no opposition to them that I have heard of. The fact that the English penciled are not in the Standard docs not prevent poultry associations from offering good prizes upon them, the same as is being done with the whites. Os course, the judging would have to be done in accordance with some club standard, as our American Standard gives us nothing to go by. I just received quite a lengthy let ter from the secretary-treasurer of the English Runner Duck club, with inclo sure of their club standard, in which he has marked a portion which they consider most important, to-wit: "Type. Above all, type must occupy the flrst place and receive chief attention. Any failing in shape of head, neck or body or low carriage should tell heavily against the bird. On no account must evenness of markings and color be con sidered in preference to correct type.” It says that drakes should stand from 28 to 36 inches high, and ducks 25 to 30 inches. One can readily see what a. wonderful reach the fowls should have. The short or thick neck ifc an abomination. The neck should by all means fit opto the body with a fun nel expansion. They have given shape of head, bill, eyes and neck, 30 points; body, shape and carriage, 45 points, or, in other words, 75 points to type, with 25 left for color and markings. In describing the markings of breast of drake, they say. when closely ex amined, the feathers show a soft fawn ground finely penciled or peppered with a slightly warmer shade. On the duck the ground color should be fawn, the centers being slightly darker than the lacing or penciling, which is a brighter or warmer tint. You will notice by this the impression is given that there is a very mild or faint penciling or Judge Marshall will he glad to answer in this department questions on all points of rearing utility and fancy poultry. He can not undertake, however, to reply personally to such let ters of inquiry. Address Judge F. J. Marshall, College Park, Ga. Orpingtons. International Conference. Mr. Walton, In his letter, indicates that they would like to confer with Americans before the next Standard text is definitely settled, in an effort to have our standards as near the same as possible, that there may not be bo much discussion and dissatisfaction on all sides. Then if our American breed ers desired to import stock from Eng land. the home of the Runner, they would be able to write intelligently about what they wanted and expected. Personally, we would like to see but one standard for tne colored Runners and that the faintest kind of penciling or lacing of the English type, in which we would expect to see an improve ment toward the slim, rangy, long necked type, instead of the many we see at this time, with the thick old African goose type of neck on them. But I doubt very much whether w» get all factions agreed upon such a thing. Under existing circumstances, we would advise you to get In commu nication with the secretaries of some of the shows at which you wish to ex hibit and find out what arrangements they are making, if any, for the pen ciled type. I am with the English in their ideas for the extreme in type. If we have a Runner at all, let us have one for all that the name implies, slim and racy in type, with all the ac tivity possible.
