DESPITE WILSON
Governor’s Protest Is Called
Comic—Tammany to Control
New York Convention.
SYRACUSE. N. Y, Sept. 30.—Gov
ernor Woodrow Wilson's ultimatum
from Seagirt that the Democratic state
convention, which goes into session to
morrow. must be absolutely "un
bossed," was still the cause for giggles
among the political wiseacres this
morning. They say that Wilson’s
warning to Tammany is laughable, in
view of the fact that Tammany this
year is as strong as ever before, and
Tammany will dominate the convention
tegardless of Wilson s desires.
Senator O’Gorman said concerning
the Wilson statement:
"I am heartily in favor of his stand
and shall do all in my power to make
this convention a free and open one.”
Charles F. Murphy, Tammany leader,
when told of the Wilson challenge,
snorted, then snapped:
- “Nothing, to say.”
Congressman William Sulzer, pro
gressive leader, said "the progressive
element in the Democratic party of
this state will use every effort to make
this convention one of the people and
not of party bosses."
Murphy to Name Governor,
But there is a general feeling that
the man who will be nominated for the
governorship is the man who will b
chosen by Mutphy.
The platform that the convention
will adopt will be dictated by Murpijy.
And so it will fee with the nomination
of the test of the state ticket and the
selection of chairman, temporary ami
permanent.
Governor Dix is still Murphy's candi
date for standard-bearer this fall. Su
preme Court .Justice Victor J. Dowling
is said to be Murphy’s second choice
for governor.
A fight on the floor of the convention
hall between Tammany and anti-Tam
•nany facttons is certain. Congressman
William J. Sulzer, who is out for th
governorship as a leader of the pro
gressive Democrats, will have the back
ing of all the progressive and anti-
Tammany factions in the state.
Chairman Picked.
Martin H. Glynn, former state comp
troller, was chosen temporary chair
man. Congressman Francis Burton
Harrison, of New York, and John D
McMahon, of Rome, and Norman E
.Mack, of Buffalo, are being spoken ot
for permanent chairman.
Congressman John Fitzgerald, of
Brooklyn, and Senator Robert Wagner,
of New York, have been selected to
frame the platform. Wagner will in
sert the planks that relate to state af
fairs and Fitzgerald will write those on
national matters and act as supervisor
of the entire platform.

J. P. WALL.
Candidate for Council From the
Ninth Ward.
To those of you whom it has been my
misfortune not to see personally. 1 take
this means of explaining my candidacy.
Having been a resident of the Ninth
ward for a number of years, and realiz
ing the many needs of the entire ward
in the way of street improvements, bet
ter sanitary conditions, etc., and having
had fourteen years' working experience
in the medical department of the Unit
ed States army, which also embraces
and looks after the sanitary conditions
of the Department of the Gulf, I feel
that in addition to my other qualifica
tions that my long experience in this
section in handling matters of drain
age, excavating and general conditions
which govern the health of a commun
ity, will be of great service to our ward
in the event of my election.
The Ninth ward, in view of the many
improvements that will undoubtedly be
made within the next two years, most
assuredly needs careful, conscientious,
scientific supervision in order to main
tain the proper standard of health
which it would enjoy under proper
management.
I consider this the most vita! of all
propositions that will come under the
attention of the councilman of this
ward during the coming administra
tion. and I promise you, if elected, to
devote every particle of time, energy
and experience within my power in
your behalf, should you honor me with
the office to which I aspire.
I believe I can be of service to my
ward, and ask the support of each and
every voter. J. P. WALL.

Your vote and influence
is solicited for R. M. Clay
ton for Chief of Construc
tion.
