MARSHALL. \atioiial Laying Contest at Missouri Experiment Station MUI NT AIN GROVE; MO. ' I’ht’ mauuer and magnitude in which this great laying contest has been carried on makes it of more than usual interest to all poul-l try raisers. The contest is to continue for one year I h<- eleventh mouth has passed with Sep tember. Each pen contains five females, either hens or pullets. These layers nave beeir furnish ed by poultrymen in different parts of the coun try. Some remarkable records have been made. By tin- report we learn tiiat August has been an •extremely hot mouth at the station and many of the hens were in full moult, cutting down the production ol eggs very materially. In spite of this there have been, however, some great in dividual records. A White Plymouth Rock hen laid 2!) eggs in 31 days, which makes her total ior the len months 237 eggs, and she has two months yet in which to complete her record, and tell whether she can be passed by other hens which are but little behind her. This hen has consumed 48 pounds of dry mash, 32 pounds of grain. 2 pounds of grit, bone and shell. The best pen record to tlale is a pen of Rose Comb Rhode Island Reds, which laid 899 eggs, or an average of 180 eggs per [ hen. ; ,7 ; The best len pen records are .as follows: It. R. I. Reds. Missouri. 899 eggs; IS <’ White Deghorns, California, S7l; | White W yandottes. Ark:.ns:i'. 858: S. I White Leghorns. Georgia, 856: B. Ply | mouth Rocks, Illinois. 843; Black Or | pfngtons, Indiana. 823: S. C. Rhode i Island Reds. Virginia. 810; Silver Wyan- I doties, lowa, 793; R. Brown Leg horns, Missouri, 790; R. C. R. i. Reds, lowa, 7.82. I'omteen individual hens have laid more than 200 eggs in the ten months wit It records as follows: White Rock, 237 eggs. Batted Rock, I 216: R. I'. R. 1. Red, 2’5; S. c. ft. I. I Bed, 213; S. <’. White Leghorn, 209; Arn-ima. 209; W hite Orpington, 206; S. [ 1 White Leghorn. 206; S, C. Brown I Leghorn. 203: S. C. White l.eghoin, 203; Barred Rock, 208; Barred Rock, 201; Silver W.vf niiotte. 200; R. <’. It. I. Red, 200. Great Records. These are great records, and it will he noticed tiiat the old reliabh Barred I Plymouth Rod; family had three hens 'io lite 200 egg list, which is more than any other variety could show. To be taken, of course, for what it is worth, | but these are mighty good records when tve stop to consider that the average I farm lien lays but about 80 . ggs. S. <'. 'Rhode Island Reds Im v< made the best average so fat; 60 It? us average 139 eggs each. Ten Blad; Orpingtons. 137 eggs; 10 Black Leghorns. 137; 3o Silver Wyan dottes.-136: 20 Wiiite Orpingtons, 135; 30 Buff Orpingtons. 132; 30 it. C, Reds. 132; 2o S. c. Bla< k Mitioreas, 132; 90 S. <'. White l.egiiorits, 127; 20 Anconas, 122; 2o S. <Brow n Li ghorns, 116; 15 It. <Wliit. Leghorns. 115 70 Barred Plymouth Rock-. 113: In Indian Runner DltCks. 111. 3o White Plymouth Rocks. 107. And so on down the line. <?f course, in studying these averages one must take into consideration the number of i liens in making lite average, and this is lint a ten mom its' record. The hens have (it days left in which to complete their year's record. The director calls attention Io the fad that these averages | include all liens of the variety named. 1 good bad ami indifferent. Several In ns .Judge Marshal! will be glad to answer in this department questions on all points of rearing utility and fancy poultry. , lie can not undertake, however, to reply personally to such let ters of inquiry. Preparations are being made for next year's contest to commence No vember 15. They can only accommo date a certain number of pens. I think it is five pens of each variety, many of which are already filled. There are va cancies of one pen of each of the fol lowing varieties: R. <'. White Leg hot its, S. t'. Brown Leghorns, S. All other varieties have enough to fill their class. It is the in tention to have the same number of en tries in cadi class or variety, so that if the above mentioned varieties do not fill they will be barred entirely front the contest. Prizes for Winners. t'ash prizes will be offered as follows: B> st p> n record. SSO; second best pen record, $25: third best pen record. sls; fourth best pen record. $lO. Rest individual record, S2O; second besf individual record. sls; third best individual record. $10; fourth best in dividual record, $5. one-hundred dollars in cash is offered for the best variety record, divided as follows: $5 for best pen record In each of the 20 varieties. The National Black Langshan club otters a silver cup for the best pen rec ord. and a cup for the best hen or pullet record. The American White Orpington club offers a. fine silver cup for the best iay ' Ing pen of White Orpingtons owned by a club manager. Other clubs have sig • nified tlieir willingness to offer prizes on their varieties. Tins contest means much to the state of Missouri and Hie entire country. People are becoming alive to the fact that there is much in breeding for eggs, and that some families or strains of a variety tire much better layers than are others of the same variety. So that it is really more in the strain after all than the variety.
