Orpingtons and Ducks | Judge F. J, Marshall I have Just recently begun taking The Georgian. 1 like it very much, ; and enjoy reading your articles on poultry I rai/i- a ft a White Orp ington chickens, also some white Indian Runnel iluck-s Would appreciate i it if you will give me your plan for feeding for eggs, is neither my hens nor dinks are laying at all. How much feed should lie given to ten hens to make them lay? Can you get a White Orpington cock which will not «ho« brass on its back? J have some pullets that are beauties, and my cockerels look good, only they show too much brass on the back. Do a blue leg and brassiness disqualify a white Orpington? If you can give me any dots or help througli The Georgian. I will appreciate it. Very respectfully, Abbeville, Ga. W. A. C. Chickens and ducks both need a good variety in their feed to keep them in prime condition and laying. I should use prin cipally some good scratch feed for the hens, or if you mix your own feed, say cracked corn, oats, wheat and a little kaffir corn if you can get it. This makes a good scratch feed. Then j have a hopper full of good wheat bran for them ! to run to at will. The ducks need more mashes, i such as corn meal, wheat bran, shorts, beef meal or beef scraps well mixed and dampened. Then they need some grain feed besides. Both hens and ducks should be well supplied with green stuff. One can not give definit® amounts to be fed as some flocks of the same number will require and consume more than others. It is a good plan to regulate the feed accord ing to their appetites. When they appear very hungry at feeding time give a little more feed ala feeding. If they become listless and act like they didn’t care whether they had anything to eat or not it is a good plan to cut the feed down a little. Keep ♦ hem with a good appetite at all times, but not ravenous. It is a pretty hard matter to have White Orpington males without more or less sunburn or brass upon their bflcks. especial ly so with old males. Os course some strains or families are a good deal worse than others in that way. This can be lessened a good deal if one will keep these males entirely out of the summer sun. Let them moult in the shade. You can constantly im- prove your males hacks from year toyear by selecting the whitest backed ones every time for breeders. This brassiness is not a disqualification but real yellow or buff feathers in any part of the plumage is. In fact, feathers any other color than white, such as black, brown or buff. The blue legs disqualify or any other color than white or pinkish white, or yellow beaks and skin. Anything other than white or pinkish white shows impunity of blood. Positive white in car lobes covering more than one-third of their surface disqualifies. In getting the color and other fancy points right one must not forget the shape or type. Let us have them as near typical as we can. Short necks, deep bodies, medium length legs and so forth. Judge Marshall will be glad to answer in Uris department questions on all points of rearing utility and fancy poultry. He can not undertake, however, to reph personally to such let ters of inquiry.
