Duck Questions
Judge F. J. Marshall:
Will you kindly inform me as to the proper time for picking ducks?
Should they be picked more than once? Is it detrimental to them?
Truly,
Montrose, Ga. MRS. A. C. ROSS.
Ducks may be picked in June and again in August in this
country without any material damage except that while the
new feathers are growing they will not lay quite so many eggs.
Os course one does not pick all the feathers from them, just
the soft feathers upon the breast lower part o fbody and fluff
around the stern. None of the stiffer feathers are plucked. It
Is a question to be decided whether you want feathers and
; fewer eggs or the reverse.
Pudge F. J. Marshall:
I have eleven grown ducks. They have not laid an egg since the middle
of July. I feed them on the following ration: Wheat bran, shorts, beef
scrap, oyster shell and some time I give them cotton seed meal. I mix this
up to a crumbly mash and add sand. I feed this about 6 o'clock in the morn
ing and at 12 o’clock. At night I give them a quart of hen feed. In addi
tion to this. I give them green food once a day. Can you tell me the reason
why they don’t lay? Yours very truly,
Griffin, Ga. ALEX R. MURRAY.
I think I should give them at least three .meals a day.
and four -would be still better, of course dividing up the amount
fed. I would omit the cotton seed meal, as I think it too solid
and too much concentrated. Ducks need coarse, bulky, filling
feed. The more they have to eat to get results the better.
Your ducks have been taking their annual rest. If you will
change their feed, giving them a mixture of corn meal, wheat
bran, shorts, beef scraps and shell in a crumbly mash twice a
day with mixed, dry hen feed once a day, I think they will soon
get busv again.
Judge Marshall will be glad to answer in this department
questions on all points of rearing utility and fancy poultry.
He can not undertake, however, to reply personally to such let
ters of inquiry. Address Judge F. J. Marshall, College Park, Ga.
