Marshall: I have just re. eittly begun taking The Georgian. I like it very mueii, and enjoy reading your articles on poultry. I raise a few White Orp ington chickens, also some white Inman Runner ducks Would appreciate o f you o i ll give me your plan for feeding for eggs, as neither my hf r.s nor ducks are laving at all. How much feed should be given to t<-n hens to make them lay <'an you get a White Orpington cock v. hi. ii will no' show brass on its back'.’ 1 have some pullets trial are beauties, and m.v cor kerels look good, only they show too much brass on the back. Ito a blue leg and brassin>-.ss disqualify a white tfrpingtonif you can giro me anr dots or help through The Georgian. I will applrriate it. Very respect fully, Abbeville, Ga \V. A. <'. t’liickens anti tlucks both need a good variety in tht'i - feed to keep them iii prime condition ami laying. I should use prin- cipally some good scratch set 1 for the hens, or it ton mix your own feed, say cracked corn, oal.s, wheat and a little kaffir corn if you can get it. This makes a good scratch feed. Then have a hopper full of good wheat bran for them to run to at will. The ducks need more mashes, such as imrii meal, wheat bran, shorts, beef meal or beef scraps well mixed and dampened. Then they need seine grain feed besides. Both hens and thicks should be well supjthed with green stiitf. One can not give definite amounts to be fed a> some Hocks of the same number will require and consume more than others. Il is a good plan Io regulate the feed accord ing to their appetites. When they appear very hungry at feeding lime give a little more feed at a feeding. If they become listless ami act like the\ didn 1 care whether they had anything to cat or not it is a good plan to cut the feed down a little. Keep them with a good appetite at all limes, but not ravenous. It is a pretty hard matter to have White Orpington males without more or less sunburn or brass upon their back’s, especial ly so with old males. Os course some strains or families are a good deal worse than others in that way. This can be lessened a good deal if one will keep these males entirely out of Ihe summer sun. Let them moult in the shade. You can constantly im- prove vour males backs from year to year b.\ selecting the whitest backed ones every lime for breeders. I his brassiness is not a disqualification but real yellow or buff feathers m an.v pari of the plumage is. In fact, feathers any other color Ilian white, such as black, brown or buff. Ihe blue legs disqualify or any other color than white or pinkish white, or yellov beak' and skin. An.v thing other than while or pinkish ‘white shows impunity of blood. Positive white in ear lobes covering more than one-third of their surface disqualifies. In getting the color and other fancy points right one must not forget the shape or type. I,el us have them as near typical as we can. Short necks, deep bodies, medium length legs ami so forth. .Jinlce Marshal 1 w ill lie mlihl f<> answer in this (Lepnrl ment niesliotis on all poinis of rearing utility and fancy poultry, lie can not iindi'i'take. however, to replv persotiallv to such |ef ' "i inqnii'4. See how the long line of residences is read ing far out into the fields, new streets being opened up everywhere, and the building zone constantly pushed further out. Soon it will be a serious matter to find a desirable building lot in four or five miles of center. z Prudent people who can see a little ahead should provide a home site now.
