OCTOBER 8. 1912. MEMORIAL TABLET TO PROF. BASS TO BE UNVEILED FRIDAY The unveiling of the Professor \V. A. Bass memorial tablet will take place next Friday afternoon at I o'clock in the chapel of the Roys High school. Speeches will be made by James L. Mtiyson. president of the Roys High School Alumni association; W. 51. Sla ton. superintendent of schools, and by former pupils 'if Professor Bass. The memorial has .been erected by the alumni association of the Boys High school, in which Professor Bass taught for 37 veins. Death ended his services as a teacher in 1911. Cecil Meyer, the vice ptesi tent of the alumni association, and W. A. Fuller, the sec retary. actively aided In the work of erecting the tablet and the pupils of t.ie old teacher responded readily. Forrest Adair, who was in the first graduating class under Professor Bass, will be present at the unveiling, as will ('lark Howell and A. Finding Willis Meyers, a negro, in his hm>- on the Hastings Farm t'ornpany planta tion, near Trimble, tin.. Silas Lowe, a negro employed on the plantation, shot and killed Meyers in the house, and kill ed his own wife as she tan to a neigh bor's dwelling. Forcing the Issue. LONDON. Oct. 8. —Montenegro has declared war against Turkey, and her army today advanced into Ottoman territory, where fighting is now going on. This news was conveyed from. Cet tinje. the capital of Montenegro, in an official message to the Servian charge d’affaires in this city. it also states that the other mem bers of the Balkan league will have to follow suit. Although the smallest of the Balkan states, having an army of only 50,000 men. Montenegro has thus forced the hand of the powers by declaring war on Turkey. It has been feared all along by Mon tenegrin leaders that Bulgaria would weaken at the last moment and allow the pressure of the powers to prevent her from going to war. Patriotic Mountaineers. B.—Eight illicit stills have just been destroyed on the Kincaid mountain near Rome. The stills were built during the peach si ason and hundreds of gallons of peach brandy bad been manufactured for the market and sold as contraband goods. The officers d.stroyed the stills, fifteen fermenters and fixe barrels of peach elder in the process of manufacture into brandy. In a courageous attempt to rescue three-y e ir-old < 'barline Farris from tile path of a ('entrul avenue street car in Giant street last night. Mrs. W. S. Sparrow, of 208 South avenue, barely escaped with her life, and is being I raised today for her heroism. The child whom she tried to save fell under the forward trucks of the car and was ' rp -lied to deal The accident occurred in the view of a carload of pleasure seekers liound tor Grant park. Little Charline, en deavoring to follow her playmate, Lil 'ian Sparrow, darted into the street, but i::msed, confused, in the track of the approaching ear. As if dazed by tlie in idlight, she stood there. Mrs. Spa’row, who had been out walking with the children, rushed from the sidewalk and reached the track in lime to clasp the little girl in her arms before the ear struck. The eolision loosened her grip. Before the motor man. who had been fighting his brakes desperately, could bring the ear to a stop the forward trucks had passed over the child's form. Mrs. Sparrow was thrown under the ear and severely injured, but the ear was halted before Hie trucks reached her.
