MONTENEGRINS
IN BATTLE
Fight Lasting 36 Hours Ends
Disastrously for Army of the
Little Kingdom.
VIENNA, Oct 9. In a battle lasting
more than 36 hours the third detach
ment of the Montenegro army, which
crossed the frontier near De-rnaea, has
>een decisively defeated by a Turkish
force.

Dispatches received today from vari
ous points in the Balkans aud from
Salonika state that fighting between
soldiers of the Balkan league and
Turkish troops is becoming general,
despite the fact that Montenegro was
the only one of the Balkan kingdoms
that had formally declared war upon
the Ottoman empire today.
Fighting between Greek soldiers and
Turks is going on along the Graeco-
Turkish frontier. It Is reported from
Athens that soldiers have been killed
and wounded on both sides in frequent
clashes between the forces
Marching on Albanian City.
A Montenegrin force. Is reported to
be marching on the Albanian city of
Scutari on the southern shores of Scu
tari lake. There is a big Turkish gar
rison at Scutari, which has been
•trengthened since the Balkan situa
tion became critical.
Servian troops have crossed the
•outhern frontier and have been fight
ing with Ottoman soldiers since noon
yesterday At Javir a severe fight took
place. The Servians retreated after
losing a few men. v
Despite Turkey's concessions to the
Mallssori tribesmen, the native, Chris
tians in Albania, the tribesmen are still
up In arms. Two thousand Malissori
tribesmen have occupied south of Scu
tari, where they have a Turkish block
house under siege.
Turks in Beleagured Fort.

toman commanders in \lbania. Is
cooped up with the Turkish soldiers in
the beleagured fort.
It is reported that a number of Turks
have been massacred near Tortuki’,
in Bulgaria, by fanatic Bulgarians dur
ing an anti-Turkish demonstration
Kmg Nicfe. is of Montenegro and his
second son. Prince Mirko, a general in
the Montenegrin army, arrived today
at Podgoritza, the military headquar
ters. King Nicholas will probably take
the field at the head of his army.
Berlin dispatches report that Sergius
Sazonoff. the Russian foreign ministet
who has been in London and Paris
discussing the Balkan situation with
the secretaries, has become convinced
that a general war in southeastern Eu
rope can not be prevented. Russia will
use her endeavors now’. It Is said, to'
stop the war.

marriage and divorce, said Mrs Orville
T Bright, of Chicago, addressing the
National Conservation congress.
James H. Claspy.
James H. Claspy, aged 77 years, died
at hist residence, 110 Auburn avenue,
last night at 10:30 o’clock. He was a
member of the Capital Odd Fellows
lodge No. 60. His wife and two daugh
ters survive him. The body was re- <
moved to Patterson's chapel, where the
funeral will be held tomorrow after
noon at 3 o’clock Interment will be at
Oakland.
HUGHES’ BROTHER-IN-LAW DIES.

MEET IN ATLANTA
The Southern district convention of
the Christian and Missionary alliance
will assemble on October 20 in the
temporary tabernacle at 799 Capitol
avenue for an eight-day session. Del
egates and visitors will be present from
many cities.
Among the prominent preachers in
attendance will be Rev. A. B. Simpson
and A. E. Funk, of New York; L. B.
Compton, of Asheville, N. C.; F. P.
Pottery of Spokane, Wash.; R. A. For
rest. of Toccoa, Ga., and one or two
returned missionaries. The services
will consist of preaching, prayer, tes
timony, Bible teaching and singing and
will be held mornings, afternoons and
evenings each day.
The alliance is an undenominational
world-wide missionary organization,
composed of Christians of all denomi
nations.
The, Atlanta convention will be pre
ceded by a district prayer conference
to be held at the Toccoa Falls insti
tute October 17. IS and 19.

MARRIAGES URGED BY

CHICAGO. Oct. 9—The Rock River
conference of the Methodist Episcopal
church has placed itself on record as
favoring radical reforms in marriage
la ws.
Federal control of the entire subject 1
of marriage and divorce insuring uni
formity of laws is urged.
Physical examination of the con
tracting parties, wide publicity of the
intention of the parties to marry, a law
compelling the filing of a certificate
setting forth all places of previous resi
dence a statute providing that no di
vorce he granted except upon Scrip
tural grounds, a statute making wife
abandonment a felony and rigid laws
prohibiting the manufacture and sale
of intoxicating liquors, were some of
the reforms urged by the conference.

YOUTH DENIES HE WAS
IN GANG THOUGHT TO
HAVE WRECKED TRAIN
‘ Southern railroad detectives think
that in Tom Tanksley, a Murray coun
ty youth, who is held at the Tower
charged with the theft of a horse in
Dalton, they have one of an organized
gang that wrecked a Southern passen
ger train at Cornelia last Thursday
morning.
C. W. Burke, chief special agent, who
quizzed the boy at the Tower after he
was brought to Atlanta by a Murray
county deputy sheriff, asserts that the
Tanksley boy has made a full confes
sion of his connection with the wreck.
Tanksley stoutly denied to his jailer
that he had a hand in the wrecking.
According to his story, he stole a
horse In Eton, Ga., drove it to Dalton
and sold it for S2O on Tuesday last.
He then came to Atlanta and left here
for Gainesville Wednesday. He says
that he was at the scene of the wreck
a few hours after it happened, but did
not have a hand in the wrecking.

Rules In Atlanta
The end of that which is known as “Woodwardism” in Atlanta is at
hand.
Without hypocrisy, Phariseeism or cant it will be killed.
Mr. Chambers has addressed the following letter to the Evangelical
Ministers’ Association, and its representative, this Executive Committee.
I
Gentlemen: ,
At the beginning of this campaig n 1 announced that I was in favor of
enforcing the laws of this state, and thought that was a statement which
could not be misunderstood. I had n? intention of injecting into the cam
paign the moral question or social evil-
In several communications the Executive Committee of the Men and
Religion Forward Movement had punished, they placed me in a position
where it was apparent to my mind that I was to receive no credit for my
past endeavors to live an upright life- I resented these publications, and I
replied as I thought was necessary for the preservation of my own self-re
spect, in strong terms to their statement. I now repeat that no man living
can dictate to me the manner in which I shall perform my duty as an offi
cial of this city.
I have not desired to make this matter an issue in this campaign; but
y°u r dignified and considerate resolution, and the language and tone of your
bulletin, which are manifestly friendly to me, bring the issue prominently
forward in a form that my respect fob you and what you represent demands
a direct answer from me.
Since the issue is made, there is no middle ground. Nor would I oc
cupy such if there were. I have never had any intention of doing otherwise
than support Chief James L. Beavers in the discharge of his duty. Every
impulse of my life leads that way. That any man should doubt it is regret
ted by me. Without reference to the wisdom of his action, “yes,” I will sus
tain him without fear or favor.
I must say further that every legitimate business enterprise authorized
by the laws of this state shall be protected. But criminals shall not have an
opportunity to do business in this city.
I have been charged with belonging to a ring in this city. Every think
ing man knows that this is not true. The ring that is trying to get control
of the city is a ring of gamblers and violators of the law, who are backing
Mr. James G. Woodward in his race. This ring is headed by Chas. C. Jones,
who has for years drawn his daily bread from illegal traffic in human virtue
and human blood. For him 1 have no sympathy, and, so help me God, I
shall see that this man does not reap any further benefit from the infa
mous traffic in which he has been so long a dealer. He is entitled to to
consideration and shall have none until he ceases to follow his nefarious
pursuits.
Men and women of Atlanta, I call upon you to rise In your power and
drive from your community this man and his associates by such an over
whelming vote that he can never again find a candidate with sufficient te
merity to do his bidding and enter the race for Mayor.

Monday, more than seventy-five ministers and pastors of Atlanta
passed, among others, the following resolution:
“BE IT RESOLVED, That, as ministers and pastors we should
not become involved in controversies between candidates for political
office unless the gravest necessity in public morals should demand it.”
That necessity has arisen.
Neither the ministers nor this committee, nor the good people of
Atlanta have any quarrel personally with Mr. Woodward, Mr. Charles C.
Jones and other men who have been guilty of the same sins and mistakes.
God and man can and will forgive them if there is honest repentance.
But never again under police protection will women and girls be
bought and sold in this city.
Never again can Mr. Woodward be Mayor of Atlanta if men do their
duty.
Mr. Chambers has placed the issue fairly before the people.
Without hypocrisy, men who believe that “Decency against Indecen
cy,” which is “law against lawlessness,” to be the supreme issue, can
support him.
Without reservation as to those evils with which Mr. Woodward’s name
is linked, Mr. Chambers has, with Chief Beavers, in obedience to his con
science and the expressed wish of Atlanta’s churches, taken a stand
which will bring upon him the most bitter, venomous, underhanded and
open attacks from the most unscrupulous of criminals, those men who
are willing to live either directly or indirectly by a traffic which can exist
only by the ruin and betrayal of girls.
The respectable men, who support Mr. Woodward will endeavor to
prevent these attacks.
But they will be unable to control criminals.
And with the criminals in making the attacks will be the corrupt
politicians for whom the Brothel has ever proved an “unbreakable bank.”
This makes it the sacred duty of the churches in our Midst to support.
Mr. Chambers not merely with prayers, but also with tireless and unend
ing sacrifice and work.
Tonight in the Churches prayers of thanksgiving will go up to God,
who has given and will give us the victory.
Amd they beg all good men regardless of creed, belief or lack of be
lief to join with them in forever freeing Atlanta from this unspeakable
shame.
We do not charge Mr. Woodward with being a criminal.
Nor do we say that all men who support him are criminals or black
guards.
Some men known to be sincere and respectable are supporting him.
We believe them to be sadly mistaken.
We appeal to them to stop and think.
In view of Mr. Woodward’s past life and present attitude his elec
tion now would be the greatest calamity that could befall our city
Atlanta should and will put an end to that which is known as
“Woodwardism.”
