JOS. M. DIXON | By SENATOR JOSEPH M. DIXON. Chairman of the National Progressive Party. NEW YORK. Oct. 9.—1 have just returned from a two weeks trip in the states west of the Mississippi river, in cluding most of the Rocky Mountain territory . The situation there can best be described as a veritable political involution. Old party affiliation and party lines have been smashed to smithereens. The voters everywhere are in rebellion against the old political order. West of the Mississippi river there is no stratification. The agitation there during theu past ten years has left a fertile soil for the propagation of the live issues of today. Let it be understood once for all that this is not a Roosevelt party; that this present political revolution is not a re volt from the Republican party. It is lite evolution of democracy itself. West of the Mississippi river,/during a two weeks journey, I saw just one* man wearing a Taft badge. There is no Taft sentiment among the people of the West. I find very little Wilson enthu siasm anywhere. Os course, the Democratic politicians are lined up for Wilson, but it is not an enthusiastic following. It is merely the hopes of political victory and the dis tribution of postoffices that is keeping the local Democratic leaders in line for Wilson. Progressive Enthusiasm Genuine. On the other hand, I find genuine liv ing enthusiasm everywhere for the Progressive propaganda. In Colorado, Utah. Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, it is not a question of of fices. but deep-seated, intense, burn ing enthusiasm for the new party of the common people. In tile industrial centers the senti ment for the Progressive movement and for Roosevelt and Johnson is literally overwhelming. Among these classes there is a universal expression of opin ion that the Progressive movement means the equitable settlement of the every day problems of the people them selves. Among the railroad men, miners, and the men employed in hazardous occu pations generally the question of com pulsory insurance of the industrial workers, as set forth in the Progressive platform, has appealed mightily. These men and women have seen the cruel injustice that follows the loss of life and limb by the individual worker in society and the terrible burden that is unloaded on the helpless survivor and his wife and dependent children. The declaration against child labor, the minimum wage for women, the eight hour day, the promise of a commission Hall Caine’s New Serial I “The Woman Thou Gavest Me” is a strangely human story of a woman’s life. You will be carried to the intensest pity—the deepest love and the extreme of hatred as you follow each character. Hie men and women will indelibly impress you and hold your keen interest to the very end. More Standard Oil Letters The Truth About Roosevelt-Archbold I William Randolph Hearst in the October issue answers Senator Penrose and those false to their trust. It is an unrelenting revelation in the interest of truth and justice, and in the hope of better government. The article reveals the Standard Oil cipher code and shows their investments in U. S. Senators. The surprising attitude of the then President is disclosed. This article should be read by every patriotic citizen. i Hearst’s Magazine 15 Cents a Copy $1.50 a Year to investigate the question of old age pensions similar to that adopted by Germany thirty years ago, appeals to the great working classes of the na- I tion a thousand times stronger than does the academic discussions indulged in by the platfoim makers of the old political parties. Men and women un derstand what these questions mean to them individually. Human Qualities Attract. Os course, in certain quarters the human qualities of Roosevelt and Johnson, as strong, virile, fighting lead ers, has given enthusiasm and impetus to the present campaign; but these are only the surface indications behind the present movement. Deeper and far more important are the living, red blood, human interest things that go to make up the Progressive party program. It is the cause of humanity, as pre sented in the Progressive platform, that gives it its living strength among the people of the West, While the names of Roosevelt and I Johnson lend virility and vigor to the i campaign, it is the cause itself that | gives the movement its deep-seated i strength with the people. Summing up the whole Western sit- I uation. I would say that the Taft can didacy is a joke and the Wilson-Mar shall ticket strength lies in the hope for 11 office.
