POLLY UP ON LATE SLANG

Zoo’s Champion Bird Positively
Refuses to Allow Any One to
Get “Fresh” Around Her.
Gentle'readers, permit us to present
Polly of the Zoo. Polly, meet every
body. Now, be careful what you say
and don’t pull any rough stuff.
Just because you've been introduced
don’t think you can walk up to Polly
at Grant park and take any liberties.
Polly is fairly courteous sometimes.
Will she eat out of your hand? You
bet she will, and eat a large slice out
of it if you’re not careful. Hut she
loves Captain J. W. Norman, of the
park police, and she has a vocabulary
of slang which would make Silk Hat
Harry feel like last year's almanac.
Polly, who came from Brazil several
years ago, was interviewed today as
she climbed over Captain Norman’s
uniform, tried to chew off his buttons,
and croaked soft confidences into his
ear.
"Hello. Bill!" was her salutation. She
must have seen the Elk pin.
“Want a cracker?” asked the re
porter, not knowing anything else t<
say and feeling rather embarrassed.
"Aw, back up," retorted Polly.
“Shut up! Look out! Get out of there!
For the Lord’s sake!”
"Fine line of conversation, Polly," re
marked the interviewer.
Polly looked at him soberly, cocked
her head on one side, winked at Cap
tain Norman and growled.
“What dy'e think of that?" she ex
claimed, in evident derision.
“Come and play with me,” begged the
interviewer, after the manner of Anna
Held.
•‘Aw. go to h—1!" retorted Polly And
the interview ceased abruptly.
All those remarks and others are in
Polly's vocabulary. She has a line of
small talk suited to polite conversa
tion, but she seems to prefer the terse
expressions of the street.
She is a fighter, too. She has whip
ped every beast, bird and small boy
who has started anything, and cats
are her particular delight. She has had
the worst of only one scrap recently.
Site nearly chewed off the thumb of
a little girl who tried to fondle her,
and the child's mother stuck a hat pin
almost through Polly’s Interior econ
omy. But she was well again in i
day or two. though her loquacity didn't
return for a week.

INVESTIGATION OF
FOGEL CHARGES IS
SET FOR NEXT WEEK
.NEW 1?()RK. Oct. 10.—President
Thomas Lynch, of the National league,
has called a special meeting pf the
league, to take place at the close of
the world’s series, as most of the club
owners will be in town then. In the
formal notice Lynch stated that this
meeting was for the purpose of con
isidering a serious issue that has
arisen in the league.
He mentioned no names, but it is
known that this is the beginning of the
investigation of charges made by
Horace Fogel, president of the Phila
delphia club, concerning the National
league pennant race.
Fogel was quoted a month ago as
saying the race was fixed for the Giants
to win, arid that the umpires were
handing them games. He said prac
tically the same thing ten days ago
under his own signature. President
Lynch did not answer Fogel the first
time, but he is now thoroughly aroused,
and intends to make Fogel prove or
quit. Incidentally, this issue is likely
to-cause a change in sentiment that will
re-elect Lynch. A month ago it ap
peared that he would be voted out of
office.
Lynch will present affidavits to show
that Fogel said the things that reflect
on the honesty of the National league

Beauty Aids At Low Cost
(From The Journal of Fashion.)
"Many toilet accessories can be made
at home at comparatively small cost. A
complexion beautlfier made by dissolving
an original package of mayatone in a
half pint of witch hazel is far better than
expensive powders or patent lotions. It
removes tan. sunburn, discolored patches
and other blemishes, and keeps the skin
attractively smooth and fair.
"If your eyebrows are lighter than your
hair, or thin and straggly, apply plain
nyroxin with the finger ends. They can
he trained into well formed arches by
daily brushing. I’aroxin also improves
the eyelashes and makes them long and
lovely.
"For sores, skin eruptions, pimples,
eczema and similar beauty destroyers,
try Mother's Salve, It heals cuts, burns
and scalds without leaving a scar, and is
recommended for obstinate sores.
"Mole-hairs, fuzzy growths and super
fluous hair on face or forearms are re
moved without pain or injury with a paste
made of plain powdered delatone and wa
ter. Cover the hairs with this paste
leave on two minutes, remove, wash the
surface, and the hairs will he gone.
"A six monlns' supply of shampoc
powder is made by mixing 4 ounces of
orris root and an original package of
therox. Brush this mixture through the
hair lit comes out easily) and your scalp
will be clean, while your hair will be
light, wavy, lustrous and easy to do up."
