EDITED JUDCT. TJ/MARSMALL.
True Runner Type
Judge Marshall:
’pi P ern ht me to thank you for that timely and sensible article in
Ihe Georgian, “ Penciled Runner Ducks.” You are in position,
through the medium of The Georgian, to render great service to
this most worthy breed, and it is refreshing to see one in such posi
tion using his influence toward an improvement of the vital and
cardinal points marking the real Runner from the mongrel. I breed
pure white Runners, hut that which applies to the whites touches
the colored birds with equal force. Take away reach of neck and
body, and extreme slenderness of both; take away uprightness of
carriage, slenderness and raciness of appearance, speed, activity,
and you have the puddle duck left, wearing, perhaps, a borrowed
name. Ihe thick pudgy neck, the squatty, heavy-set body are not
marks of the Indian Runner, but of the puddle duck. And where
you find the true Runner points—type, station, carriage and trim
ness of build—you find the duck that lays the much-heralded 200
eggs per year and sometimes more. As you know, many of the col
ored so-called Runners are nothing but mongrel crosses between
real Runners and other breeds, and many of the so-called whites
are merely a commixture of Pekin and other blood with a dash of
Runner blood.
' I wish we would all join in the effort to put our various Club
Standards ahead of our own personal flocks. Too many times club
i members insist upon fashioning Standard requirements to fit the
! defects of their own flocks, when all should strive for the ideal—for
! something to build to by selecting and scientific mating.
If others would join you, we would soon eliminate the thick
: necks and the stubby bodies, we would soon eliminate the cream
■ from the white birds, and their heaviness, and we would all be work
-11 ing in the direction of the ideal—the racy, quick-moving creature
j of magnificent bearing which alone should bear the : aine Indian
Runner.
I agree with you fully; 1 am with the English in their ideas for
the extreme in type. If we have a Runner at all, let us have one
, for ail that the name implies, slim and racy in type, with all the ac
( tivity possible.
There is no doubt that Walton and his co-workers have offered
the world the last word in real Runner type, and the sooner we ad
mit that fact and take up the English description, the sooner will
i we drift away from what today, in many cases, lacks an infinite
deal of being anything worthy of the name. Respectfully.
J. C. PATTON.
We are certainly glad to have Mr. Patton express himself upon
this important matter. We wish others would let us know where
1 they stand upon vital matters pertaining not only to Runner Ducks
> j but other varieties of poultry. Let us do all we can to secure the
i i best there is in this business all along the line. We can if each one
would feel it. his duty to breed only the best and then pull for them
1 all they can. POULTRY EDITOR.
