Poultry at Alabama State Fair
The poultry exhibit at the Alabama State Eair, held in Bir- .
minjrham October 3to 12. was <1 splendid show. The entries
wer almost at the 3.000 mark, which is consid
ered one of the big kind. Not only was this
exhibit a success from point, of numbers, but
in variety and quality. The exhibit included
not only the more popular and commonly seen
varieties, but many of the really ornamental
and fancy varieties, such as Polish, Silkies,
Faverolles, Campines. Blue Orpingtons, Hou- I
dans. ete. The varieties more largely shown
were White and Buff Orpingtons, White Rocks,
Barred Rocks, White Wyandot les, Rhode Island
Reds and Indian Runner ducks. The classiest i
of these were the White Orpingtons, then the
Bulls. Rhode Island Reds and White Rocks.
The White Leghorn class in the smaller breeds ,
was a hummer. Many show birds were seen here.
But to talk about ducks, Indian Runner.
Fawn and White English Penciled and pure
white. I tell you they were all there, not by a few coops, a
handful, but by the fifties asid hundreds. I have never seen
such an exhibit in these classes
before. If the chicken part of
the show had not been large also
1 should have concluded that
people had traded off all their
chickens for chicks. It did not
look much like the Runner busi
ness was on the wane, as some
have indicated. There were
many fine individuals, too.
The Bantam class was large, there
being several hundred in all, and rep
resenting almost every recognized va
riety. The Black and Ruff Cochins
and tiie Golden and Sliver Seabrights
were really line ns elpsse-. '[’here were
a. good many entries from a distance.
The Cook farm, from New Jersey, a
great Bantam display from Cincinnati
(we did not learn the owner’s name),
a large and varied exhibit from the
poultry plant owned by Asa Candler,
Jr., of Atlanta, attracted much atten
tion. Mr. Candler goes in for the prac
tical money-making breeds, with a lot
of the novelties thrown in for good
measure. The cooping was well and
carefully done by the Spratts Patent
Judge Marshall will be glad to answer in this department
questions on all points of rearing utility and fancy poultry.
He can not undertake, however, to reply personally to such let
ters of inquiry. Address Judge F. J. Marshall, College Park, Ga.
Leghorns.

Limited Company of New York and
London, who also fed the stock with
their fancy feeds. The classification
was not well done by any means. In
stead of being strictly classed by put
ting all the old males of a variety to
gether, all the young males together
and the same with the females, they
were all mixed through in order to
please each exhibitor that he might
have all his own birds in a bunch, no
consideration being made to make it
handy for the judge. I believe the
management has had its eyes opened
this time in helping the judge to work
the show. We must have walked, little
short of 1.000 miles in doing this judg
ing. At least, that was the estimated
distance as tile pedestrians saw it. We
are of the opinion that it will never be
repeated by this same crowd. All jokes
aside, it was a great exhibit, and the
Birmingham poultry crowd deserve
great praise for their wonderful suc
cess. Such exhibits can only be got
ten together by great effort on the
part of some one. The attendance was
large, over 30.000 passed the turnstiles
on Tuesday. We were informed that
many good sales of stock were being
made.
