RAPS CRITICS OF INSURANCE LAWS Commissioner Copeland Says Recent Legislation Didn’t In jure Atlanta National Co. Deputy Commissioner of Insurance John Copeland denies a statement re cently published in several newspapers, to the effect that the insolvency of the Atlanta National Insurance Company was in any wise due to the enactment or operation of the new insurance laws, as was alleged by a well known life insurance man of north Georgia a few days ago. The National Insurance Company was completely insolvent,” said Mr. Copeland, "before the new insurance law w’as enacted, and it is absurd to say, as this insurance man did say, that ’but for the enactment of the new law the National would have been one of the most successful companies in Geor gia.’ “Such a statement as that is silly, because the company’s own statement shows otherwise “It scheduled $40,328.39 of assets, but of that amount $18,364 were pot admit ted. Its premium receipts were a little more than $40,000. and its income from ceitificates $263,080. Its disbursements " e . re ! hown to be - for the same period. $263,553. It was Insolvent under the old law— completely so. "The new’ law is not to blame for the falling to pieces of card houses, and an insurance man does himself little credit when iie seeks to saddle on the new law responsibility for the blowing up of such companies as the Atlanta National was.” HISTORIC OAK BLASTED BY BOLT FROM SKY WOODBURY, N.
