RIPS CRITICS OF
INSURANCE LAWS
Commissioner Copeland Says
Recent Legislation Didn’t In
jure Atlanta National Co.
Deputy Commissioner of Insurance
John Copeland denies a statement re
cently published in several newspapers,
to the effect that the insolvency of the
Atlanta National Insurance Company
was tn rfny wise due to the enactment
or operation of the new insurance laws,
as was alleged by a well kn6wn life
insurance man of north Georgia a few
days ago. •
Ihe National Insurance Company
was completely insolvent.” said Mr.
Copeland, "before the new insurance
law was enacted, and it is absurd to
say, as this insurance man did say, that
'but for the enactment of the new law
the National would have been one of
the most successful companies in Geor
gia.’
"Such a statement as that is silly,
becaus ■ the company’s own statement
shows otherwise.
It scheduled $40,328.39 of assets, but
of that aWounf $18,364 were not admit
ted. its premium receipts were a little
more than $40,000, and its income from
certificates $263,080. its disbursements
'J e , re _ sko " n *° ' J<l - 1,,r ti' e same period.
$-63,553. It was insolvent under the
old law— completely so.
"The new law is not to blame for the
tailing to pieces of card houses, and an
’nsuranee man does himself little credit
waen ae seeks to saddle on the new law
responsibility for the blowing up of
such companies as the Atlanta National
was.”
