Breed Characteristics and Values lii a recent issue we gave a sort of a running comment on a number of the prominent standard breeds of poultry. We take it up where we left off. The Dorking, a fowl of English origin, is one of most splendid values. It is a good layer and. when it conies to flesh values, is hardly equaled, being bred especially to secure the largest amount of breast meat. It carries a long keel (well rounded) upon which we get the white breast meat. While it is bred in a limited way, it has never seemed to become as popular in this coun try as its worth deserved. It is bred in three varieties—Whitt Silver-Gray and Colored. Or pingtons, another and later English importa tion, while in our estimation not one whit bet ter as to real values than the Dorking, seem to be sweeping this country with a wave of popularity. Like almost all English productions in the poultry line, it has a white skin and pink or light colored legs, in contrast with our yellow- F.J MAr.s3BA.DL legged American hens. The Orpington is somewhat of the Dork in £ type, but not quite so pronounced. They are not so long in body. They are much heavier than the .. Dorkings, weighing about two pounds more each. Ihe Buffs have been bred in this country for a number of years, but the Whites and Blacks are newer. On the other hand, the Dorkings are an old and well established breed. The Polish variety is bred almost strictly for ornament, for they are the fanciest of the fancy, small in size, with large, full tails and the head surmount ed by a large crest or ball of feathers, rounded and uniform in shape. They are not practical or suited to shifting for themselves upon farms. The sight is so much obstructed by the large crest that they fall easy prey to hawks and other enemies. There are seven varie ties. Any one looking for the real or namental fowl will find it here. The Hamburg is of Dutch origin. While like the Polish, they are small and of the ornametnal type, yet not being possessed with large headgear like the former, they are much more practical and useful in a general way. They are extremely graceful and tasty I in their carriage and makeup. They are splendid layers of eggs, rather ‘ small in size. They consist of six va- i rieties. The Silver Spangled, however, ! Judge Marshall will be gla 1 to answer in this department questions on all points of rearing utility and fancy' poultry. He can not undertake, however, to reply personally to such let ters of inquiry. Address Judge F. J. Marshall, College Park, Ga. Ducks. FOR SALE—lndian Runner ducks; fawn and white. Low price, easiest terms. J. R. McADAMS Phone M. 4245-J; Atl. 6027-M. Ortnewood Park. is the leader and bred more than all the others combined. The Houdan Is of French origin. While it carries with it the headgear similar to the Polish, yet it is much larger in size and of greater practical value to the poultry raiser. In color it is mottled white and black from head to tail. There is but one variety. Games are strictly in a class by them selves, being of an entirely different type and makeup from anything else in the poultry calendar. They are put together in angles, long In legs, tail and neck, and presenting an appearance of being long drawn out. The true Game fancier is rarely a fancier of any other varieties. The Game fancy is a fancy all to itself. The standard Game is composed of eight varieties —Black Breasted Red, Brown Red, Golden Duck wing, Silver Duckwing, Birchen, Rill Pyle, White, Black. The Game is a hard feathered fowl, solid in flesh, and calculated to withstand a good deal of hardship. It is very active in its makeup, therefore a good forager. They make one of the best fowls for the farm obtainable. They will come nearer se curing their living under adverse cir cumstances than any other fowl. They will hatch their own young and brood them to perfection, protecting them I from all invaders. They are about as I good layers as the Leghorns, and ma {ture in about the same time. The Black l Breasted Red is the most popular vari- I ety, with perhaps the Red Pyle next. Eggs- THOROUGHBRED Buff Orpington eggs) $1 per fifteen. 126 Windsor street.
