GRESS ZOO GETS
NEW BLACK DOE
Manager Dan Carey Reports*
on Animals Now Extinct in
Georgia Range.
\V. T. Hornaday, director of the
Bronx zoo of New York city, has do
nated a female black buck for the
Gress zoo. The gift is worth about
$125. The city already has a male
black buck.
As the agent of the New York Zoo
logical Society. Mr. Hornaday has writ
ten ban Carey, general manager of
Atlanta's parks, for information on
game extinction in Georgia. He is col
lecting statistics for the whole United
States, which will be the most accu
rate on record. The animals he has in
quired about are reported to him to
be extinct.
After an investigation. Manager Ca
rey said today that many species
thought to be extinct in this section
were still in evidence.
Passenger Pigeons Extinct.
The passenger pigeon, the bison, the
puna-nton mountain lion and elk are
gone.
Mr. Carey said the Southeastern
states were th< original range of the
American buffalo, but that they were
driven West by the early settlers.
The last passenger pigeons in Geor
gia were observed in 1886 on Pigeon
river, in Haywood county, near the
North Carolina line. It was a large
covey, but disappeared after the sum
mer season of 1886.
According to his information, the
Carolina parakeet and the tvhooping
crane are extinct, though they were seen
a few years ago.
Ruffed grouse are found in the moun.
tains of northeast Georgia.
Snowy Egrets Plentiful.
Snowy egrets are ‘numerous along
the coast, the most important rookeries
being at Brunswick and St. Marys.
Sand hill crane are numerous in
south Georgia. White-tailed deer are
also still to be found. Black bears are
common around the swamps of south
Georgia.
Gray wolves are occasionally seen in
the mountains of the extreme north of
the state, but the pack is gone. Only
individuals are ever observed.
Bea vets are seen rarely.
