Diseases of Chickens
A subscriber wants to know what is the matter with his
chickens. Several ot them have died, and upon examination
they would be very poor, meat all blue, and it
was almost impossible to cut it. The limits
would be all shriveled up ami dark in color.”
rhere are not enough symptoms given to arrive
at. a definite conclusion.
Consumption causes similar conditions, with
a sneezing noise similar to a cough, or in ’other
words, representing the cough in the animal,
with a wasting away of the flesh and general
running down •of the system, although they may
be well fed. Sometimes it is caused by a con‘
tinued case of cold or roup, but most generally
by roosting or being confined in damp, filthy
quarters.
In the first stages of the disease there is
scarcely anything discernible, but in the more
advanced stages there is a sort of a chirping
cough and a wasting away of the flesh. The
disease is considered hereditary, and stock so affected should
nob be bred from, though a permanent cure seems effected.
Treatment in advanced stages .
should be by the short cut—
‘‘hatchet route.”
I am inclined to believe, how
ever. that the conditions prevail
ing in our Subscriber’s yards are
caused by the ravages of mites or
lice. \)i' both, casing a general
run-down condition and conse
quent losing in flesh with the
blue look as described.
Although these pests are much mor ■
numerous and generally troublesome
during the hot summer months, yet
they are often silently at work burrow
ing Into the very life of our very best
fowls during colder weather while we
stand thoughtlessly by, unaware of the
damage that is being doite. They live
more constantly upon the body of the
fowl In cold weather than in warm, on
account of the warmth of the body, and
they me constantly sucking the very
life blood away through the feathers
until, as the says, they are
but little more than «kln and bones and
the flesh loses all its natural appear
ances and becomes very tough and
flabby. This causes the lungs to be
come shrunken and dark in color.
The first part of the treatment is to
get rid of the lice and mites by some
good lice powder or liquid dip. then
provliN- a good dust bath for them with
