Standard for Partridge Wyandottes and
Rhode Island Reds
Judge F. J. Marshall: lam a beginner in the poultry business and I
wish to ask you for some information in regard to my breeds.
I am breeding the Rhode Island Reds and Partridge Wyandottes; hatched
my chicks from eggs ordered last spring, and I think I have some very fine
stock, but I am not so sure about it. I would like you to tell me the standard
for these breeds so that I may be able to tell what I have.
Ocala, Fla. J. M. BACON.
I am not at liberty to give you the text of the “Standard"’
had I the inclination, as it is copyrighted. I would suggest that
you procure a copy and study it well. It will
do you good. I would say, however, that all
the Wyandottes should have the same shape of
body and Ihe same general eharaeteristics. ami
should be what you would call a plump chicken.
In color, the males should be the same as the
Partridge Cochin, with black tail and breast,
neck and saddle a bright red with a brilliant,
glossy stripe down the center of each feather;
back, a rich mahogany red.
The female has the red neck with the black
stripe down the center; tail black, covered with
feathers, nicely penciled. The rest of the plum
age should be finely penciled upon each feather,
the penciling being a mahogany brown, pen
ciled with a solid black. The penciling should
run around the contour of the feather. The
Wyandotte comb, as you know, is a rose comb, W.A.iE<?KA..T/t
but should not be confused with the Hamburg comb, which runs
back slim with a sharp point turning up slightly, while that of
the Wyandotte should follow the line of the head.
The Rhode Island Red is an entirely different type of
chicken from the Wyandotte. It '
is long in body, the breast bone (
is long. i
It makes a valuable market '
chicken on account of this long .
deep breast, giving a lot of the '
kind of meat that is much sought !
after. i
In weight they are the same as the
Wyandotte, except the pullet, which is
a half pound lighter. The weights for
Reds run: Cocks, 8 1-2; cockerels, 7 1-2' :
hens, 6 1-2, and pullets, 5 pounds. The
plumage is remarkably smooth in fin
ish and texture. The general surface '
color is a rich red ip male, except where
black Is indicated. 'The tail should be
black, except as it shades off to the
saddle. Wings—the lower edge of pri
maries should be black and the upper ;
edge of secondaries. This applies to
male and female. The tails of females
should be black, except the top feath
ers, which are edged with red. The dif
ference between the plumage of the ;
male and female is that the male has a
brilliancy of rich red which is not ob-

tainable on the females. The males are
much easier to breed to a good even
standard color than the females. The
females run much to a mealy, splotchy
surface color, some running very pale
buff in color. This is what makes the
breed so difficult to manage and give
anything like a good per cent of fait
specimens.
The Wyandottes as yet breed much
truer in color than the Reds, but 1
would stick to the Reds for the money
making part of the proposition and final
result. There has not been a breed in
such universal demand by all classes
of people since the early days of the
Barred Rocks as the Reds have enjoyed
for the past five years.
The Rhode Island Reds are one of the
best practical breeds 1 have ever had
anything to do with. The main reason
for this is that they were bred for years
in Rhode Island and Connecticut just
for their practical qualities on the farm,
with no thought of handling them as
a fancy fowl. The Reds are supposed
to be a cross between the Mediterra
nean, Asiatic and Malay games.
